Pac Rim volleyball

The Pacific Rim Tournament, for elite 19-and-under players, is back on the international volleyball calendar after an absence of more than a decade.

Two former University of Hawaii men's players -- Pono Maa and Bill Via -- are reviving the event with the blessings of USA Volleyball. USAV is looking to make the Pac Rims a permanent stop on the U.S. Junior National Team annual world tour.

This year's tournament is scheduled for July 24-27 at Klum Gym. Competing are Team Hawaii, White Rock (Canada), Korea's Inha University and Nike-Griffin from Northern California.

Six players have been selected for Team Hawaii, including current Rainbow Clay Stanley and two incoming UH freshmen, Elijah Neverdon and Caleb Fetui. Also on the team are Mililani's Adam Black (CS Northridge) and Punahou graduates Scott Wong (Pepperdine) and Koa Ostrem.

Six spots are open on Team Hawaii. Maa will hold an open tryout Sunday afternoon at a time and place yet to be decided. For more information, call Maa at 842-8139.

CASH RACE TOMORROW: The second annual King Kamehameha Kukini, a four-mile foot, wheelchair and in-line skating race that will begin on the Monsarrat Avenue side of Kapiolani Boulevard, starts tomorrow at 8 a.m.

The event offers a $7,400 purse distributed among top finishers (local residents) in five categories. The top male and female foot-race finishers receive $1,000 each.

The top male contenders are Jonathan Lyau, Chris Crawford, Paul Butterfield and Frank Pugliese. Women contenders include Autumn Johnson, Connie Comiso Fanelli, Heather Matz Jorris and Rachel Portner.

UH SAILORS HONORED: Three members of the University of Hawaii coed sailing team were named All-American by the Inter-Collegiate Yacht Racing Association yesterday.

Named to the coed first team was Jesse Andrews, a senior from Noank, Conn., while senior Chris Jewett, a junior from Wayzata, Minn., was named honorable mention. Paul Ware, a senior from San Diego, was named to the All-American Crew.
