Volunteers & Flowers
come to the Rescue

By Dean Sensui, Star-Bulletin

Volunteers, from left, Lei Chong-Kee, Ralo Heiniemi, Chau Lyons
and Kalu Cummings help make leis this morning in front of the old
federal courthouse. The King Kamehameha Day celebration
committee found itself short of about 15,000 plumeria for leis
to decorate the statue on King Street. Tomi Chong, committee
chairwoman, said she was told early this morning that one of
the vendors didn't have the flowers that were ordered for the
celebration. Chong said the vendor made other commitments
to the draping of the Kamehameha statue in Washington D.C.
and to Punahou School. The vendor just ran out of flowers.
"It's understandable," Chong said. "Vendors do that sometimes."
Chong put out the call for extra flowers, volunteers dropped
them off near the statue, one shopping bag at a time.
