Luis oversaw mass
migration of Filipinos

After World War II, Anastacio B. Luis was hired by C. Brewer & Co. to recruit and transport 6,000 Filipino field laborers to Hawaii sugar plantations.

Luis made four voyages to transport the laborers in the last mass migration of workers to Hawaii.

Luis, 85, of Hilo, a retired industrial relations superintendent for Mauna Kea Sugar Co., died Monday in Hilo Hospital.

He was also Hilo branch director of the University of Hawaii Alumni Association; Youth Activity Committee chairman of the Salvation Army, Hilo; president of the Hawaii County YMCA; Hawaii delegate to the First White House Conference on Aging; chairman of Hilo Hospital management committe; and president of the Hawaii Island Industrial Relations Association.

Born in the Philippines, he is survived by wife Librada; and daughter Leilani M.L. Wilson. Services: 7 p.m. Monday at Dodo Mortuary. Call 6-9 p.m. Services: 12:15 p.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Call from 11 a.m. to noon. Burial: Homelani Memorial Park. Casual attire.

Edward K. Akioka, 100, of Honokaa, Hawaii, a retired dentist, died Monday at home. Roy R. Becker, 79, of Honolulu, a retired executive with Von Hamm-Young and chief executive officer of Manufacturer’s Distributing Corp., died Monday in Queen’s Hospital. John J. Ennis, 52, of Waipahu, a real estate broker with Friendly Isle Realty, died Monday in St. Francis-West Hospital. Joseph Enrique, 58, of Anahola, Kauai, a construction worker for Dillingham, died Tuesday at home. Nicholas N. Gega, 57, a crane operator who was born in Honolulu, died May 28 in San Pedro, Calif. Sung Goo, 94, of Honolulu, a retired engineer with Matson Navigation Co. and merchant marine, died Monday in Nuuanu Lani Care Home.
