

Morning rush hour traffic from the mauka side of Hui Iwa Street onto Kahekili Highway has been horrendous ever since traffic lights were installed at the entrance to Valley of the Temples (earlier this year). Didn't the traffic engineers anticipate this, and if not, why haven't they noticed the result and done something? Traffic jam at Hui Iwa
caused by defective partThere should be a noticeable improvement by now, said an official with the state Transportation Department's Traffic Operations Division.
Kahekili is under state jurisdiction, but the city's Department of Transportation Services handles maintenance for the department.
Based on your complaint, city workers checked the lights on Wednesday and found a defective master controller, the DOT spokesman said. The defective part was to be replaced immediately. The city also will look at whether the length of the green light for Hui Iwa needs to be extended.
