Three Sea Warriors
get all-star honors

Three Hawaii Pacific University players, sophomore designated hitter Lee Anzai, junior catcher Deric Yanagisawa and senior pitcher Gerrard Gier, were named to the 16-member Far West Independent All-Star squad.

Anzai led the Sea Warriors in batting with a .364 average to repeat as an FWI all-star. He also had a .516 on-base percentage and scored 33 runs as the team's leadoff hitter.

Yanagisawa led the team in hits (49), doubles (12), total bases (71) and RBIs (32).

Gier led the team in strikeouts with 60, tied coach Allan Sato's school record with eight wins and threw two shutouts.

HORNSBY WINS: Hawaii triathlete Debbie Hornsby won the President's Cup International Triathlon in Green Bay, Taiwan, on Sunday.

The Academy of the Pacific teacher and five-time winner of the Tinman Triathlon was clocked in one hour, 59 minutes, 50 seconds. She won $1,500.

BEACH VOLLEYBALL: The Honolulu Volleyball Association will hold a men's open and women's open beach doubles tournament Saturday and Sunday at the Queen's Surf Beach.

Registration is $10 and will be held each day from 8:30 a.m. until 9 a.m. Play begins at 9:15 a.m. For information, call Paul McCurdy at 833-8839.

TRACK MEET: The USA Track & Field Meet will be held Saturday and Sunday at the University of Hawaii track.

Saturday's running events begin with the racewalk at 6:30 a.m. and continue throughout the morning. Contestants must register at least 30 minutes before their event. There is no entry fee for USA Track & Field members ($11 membership fee).

Sunday's field events begin at 8 a.m.

POLO OPENER: The Honolulu Polo Club's 1997 season opens Sunday at the polo field in Waimanalo.

Gates open at 12:30 p.m. There will be a parade and blessing at 1:30 and the game starts at 2. Polo continues every Sunday through Sept. 28.

USGTF CERTIFICATION: The U.S. Golf Teachers Federation will be at Luana Hills Country Club Sunday through Saturday, June 7, to train and certify new members from Hawaii.

Cost of the seven-day certification is $1,195 per person. It includes fees for course materials, daily range balls, green fees, cart fees and a certification banquet.

MAUI OPEN SET: The 54-hole Maui Open will be held June 6-8 with a pro-am scheduled for June 5 at the Sandalwood Golf Course.

The pro and championship flights will be held at the Sandalwood, Kapalua Plantation and Wailea Gold courses. Dick McClean won last year's tournament with a 36-hole score of 138 after rain canceled the final round.

LONGBOARD SERIES: The Hawaiian Longboard Federation has announced its 1997 schedule.

The series starts with the Hawaiian Style Longboard Queen's Classic June 7-8 at Queen's Beach.

The Blue Hawaii Leahi Longboard Open is scheduled for July 5-6 at Diamond Head Cliff followed by the Blue Hawaii "Toes at the Bowl" event at Ala Moana Bowl August 9-10. The final event is the Gotcha "Backwash Bash" Oct. 11-12 on the west shore.

All events start at 8 a.m.

PEARL HARBOR DUATHLON: The Pearl Harbor Outdoor Recreation Department will hold its seventh annual Ford island Run Bike Run duathlon on June 21 at 7 a.m.

Entry fee is $20 per person or $40 per team for the 2.7-mile run, 8.1-mile bike ride and 2.7-mile run. A $5 late fee will be charged after June 8. For information, call 474-6722.

MARINE TRIATHLON: The public is invited to participate in the Aviation Sprint Triathlon on June 21 at the Marine Corps Base Hawaii.

The event combines a 500-meter swim, 10-mile bike ride and 3.1-mile run.

The entry fee is $15 for civilians, with a $5 late fee for entries received after June 12.

Awards will be given to the top three male and female finishers, for team divisions and age groups.
