UH group discussing
Japan business center

A University of Hawaii delegation has traveled to Japan to discuss plans for a UH center to study Japanese business.

University President Kenneth P. Mortimer, Business Administration Dean David Bess and Finance Professor Mitsuru Misawa were scheduled to meet with Tokyo officials from today through Saturday to discuss the proposed Center for Japanese Global Investment and Finance.

Misawa said its important to understand the impact of Japanese global investments on the world financial community, particularly in Hawaii, to minimize investment as well as cultural problems.

The center would enhance understanding of the Japanese financial market, investment policies and strategies. It would focus on research, lectures, conferences and other activities related to current financial issues. Also, the center would also offer interships and faculty exchange programs. Hawaii could also be used as a case model, officials said.

"The center will serve as an important foundation for research on Japan's economy and a catalyst for lively exchange of information," said Misawa, who added the idea has been well-received by Japanese corporations in Hawaii.

Mortimer said the center would be unprecedented and unique in the United States.

Weinberg grant goes
for isle cancer headquarters

The American Cancer Society has received $1,080,000 from the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation to finish paying for its new headquarters on Nuuanu Avenue.

Lila Johnson, head of the society's Hawaii-Pacific Division, said the gift for the facility -- named the Harry and Jeannette Weinberg Center -- will help "bring our focus on beating cancer into the light."

It frees $120,000 annually for cancer society education and prevention projects in Hawaii, she said.

One is Tell-a-Friend, which provides breast cancer outreach services to native Hawaiian women, she said.

The Waimanalo program uses "women-helping-women" to encourage mammograms, she said. It also is looking into funding sources to cover the costs for uninsured, she said.

In a pilot project on Maui, trained volunteers who speak Hawaiian or Filipino dialects explain the importance of early detection and offer rides to facilities for mammograms.

Free screening is provided for other cancers with local medical groups, she said.

An 18-year-old exchange student suffered a spinal injury after he apparently dove into shallow water at Waimea Bay yesterday.
