Takahashi leads
Maui to victory

MAUI WOWEE! Kyo-ya CEO Stan Takahashi and his Sheraton Maui team caught the Hollywood bug last week. "Home & Family," a two-hour live interview and entertainment show on The Family Channel, filmed five shows plus a prime-time special from Sheraton Maui last week. Hosts Christina Ferrare and Michael Burger were joined by "General Hospital's" Ingo Radenmacher, comedian John Byner, actor Tim Conway, former Oakland Raider Bob Golic and local stars such as Henry Kapono, Keali'i Reichel and Sistah Robi. In the last show, Sheraton Maui's team faced the "Home & Family" team in a beach relay. Stan, a Farrington grad, instilled some of that old high school spirit in his Maui teammates, who charged to victory ...

A BEAUTIFUL Hawaiian morning, fine entertainment, good food and lovely flowers sum up the outdoor "Breakfast at Tiffany's" benefit for the American Diabetes Association Hawaii Affiliate last Sunday at Ala Moana Center. Nearly $50,000 was raised. Dr. Laurie Tom, the young physician from Punahou who put it together, deserves praise, as does Tiffany chief Claire Chao for her cooperation. Robert Cazimero at the piano and Kanoe Miller were a hit. Also winning applause were the duo of Pakala Fernandes and Po'oloa Tolentino and the duo of Teresa Bright and Steve Jones. Food by Kelvin Ro's Kahala Moon was also a big plus. A huge, striking painting of anthuriums by Hiroshi Tagami was auctioned for $8,000 ...

TIFFANY exec Paul Kurata and Dr. Ralph Beddow, recently named a Fellow of the prestigious American College of Endocrinology, discussed their golf games at the event. Beddow, who grew up in Kaimuki and who would sneak on the Waialae course as a boy to hunt for golf balls, in later years became a Waialae member and president of the club. "He's still hunting golf balls," Kurata said ...

Outrigger chain turns 50

OUTRIGGER Hotels & Resorts, Hawaii's oldest hotel chain, turns 50 this year and celebrated Thursday by opening a new hotel, the 287-room Outrigger Islander Waikiki. It was named after the first hotel operated by the late Roy Kelley and his wife, Estelle, the 50-room Islander. Kelley's son, Outrigger Chairman Dr. Richard Kelley, spoke at the party, as did David Carey, Outrigger CEO. Hawaiian, American and Japanese food was consumed by some 400 guests, including longtime Kelley family friends Bob MacGregor and Don Graham. Jesse Kalima, Zachary Castro and Art Parelius played and sang isle tunes...

THE FIRST anniversary dinner at A Pacific Cafe Oahu raised $10,000 for the Easter Seal Society of Hawaii. Jean-Marie Josselin and visiting chefs prepared a sumptuous meal for guests. Singer-guitarist Jon Basebase entertained ... The new Krush breaks loose at the Royal Hawaiian's Monarch Room tonight... Happy birthday to Oscar Kuwahara, retired Star-Bulletin staffer, who turns 70 tomorrow ... Attorney Eric Elkind must be a good boss. His legal secretary, Bessie Rodriguez, tossed a 30th birthday party for him in a private room at Rumours ...

ZYRON SHONIWITZ, formerly of of Nick's Fishmarket, took over as G.M. of Steck's in Kahala this week. Zyron and his sister, Alisa Shoniwitz, have the distributorship of the hot My Baby Dinosour toy through UTC Trading Co. ...

Good neighbors

LEE ANN Akaji's sister, Karin Kanno, says the former Star-Bulletin employee has some pretty fancy neighbors in San Francisco's Pacific Heights, where Lee Ann shares an apartment. Nicholas Cage is her neighbor, Don Johnson lives down the street and Danielle Steel lives one street over. Lee Ann took part in the recent Bay to Breakers fun run ... Dave Donnelly is on vacation so I will have a special Wood Craft column on Wednesday ...
