Actor Lauren Tom
part of UH Summer Session

By Star-Bulletin staff

She played Ross' girlfriend in "Friends" and Lena, the dutiful daughter in the film "The Joy Luck Club."

Lauren Tom, Obie Award-winning actress, presents her autobiographical comedy "25 Psychics," as part of the calendar of public programs at the University of Hawaii-Manoa's Summer Session.

In "25 Psychics," Tom is in search of herself. Raised in the only Asian-American family in a largely Jewish suburb of Chicago, Tom's first identity crisis was realizing she was not a white Jewish girl. Tom tries everything from tai chi to dream analysis in her quest to self-realization.

In this one-woman show, Tom portrays gurus, therapists, tarot readers and Zen masters, as well as her grandmother, the powerful family matriarch.

The show will begin at 8 p.m. June 6 at Mamiya Theatre. Tickets are $18 general, $15 students/senior citizens/UH faculty and staff. For reservations, call 956-3836.

An additional performance will be held on June 7 at the Kauai Community College Performing Arts Centre.

Tom will also be speaking at 7:30 p.m. on June 5 at UH-Manoa in the Krauss Hall Yukiyoshi Room. In this lecture, titled "A Conversation With Lauren Tom," Tom discusses her experience as a professional actress and answers questions from the audience.
