Karate classes: Hawaii Shotokan Karate holding beginner classes in June at various locations. Family rates available. No contract or registration fee. Call 988-7128.

In-line skate classes: Two-hour, four-week "How Not To...Crash Course," 5:30 p.m. May 22, University of Hawaii. Cost: $85. Must be 16-years-old or older. Register at 956-6468.

Two-week "How Not To...Crash Course" program, 10 a.m. to noon May 24 and 31, Mililani YMCA. Cost: $42.50. Must be 6-years-old or older. Register at 625-1040.

"The Skill Builder," 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. May 23 and 30, University of Hawaii. Cost: $55. Must be 16-years-old or older. Register at 956-6468.

Skates and protective gear provided.

Ballroom dance: Amateur competition in American style smooth and rhythm, and international style standard and Latin, 1 to 10:30 p.m. June 14, Ala Wai Golf Course ballroom. Formation team and selected single competitions also. Groups will be broken into adult, juniors, youths, novice, pre-championships and open-amateur categories. Fee: $20 per person. Deadline: May 23. Hawaii Audubon Society: Annual field trip to view the red-footed Booby bird colony at Marine Corps Base on Ulupau Head on the Mokapu peninsula. Meet 8:30 a.m. May 24, H-3 gate of the Kaneohe Marine Corps Base. Participants must sign a "hold harmless" agreement and carpool from the gate to the colony. Wear walking shoes. Bring water, sun protection and binoculars. Cost: $2. Registration needed. Register at 528-1432.

Ohana Picnic: Likelike School's 75th anniversary, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 24 on the school's campus. Sushi, popcorn, cotton candy, ice pops, drinks, cookies and entertainment. Those who purchased bento tickets can pick up their bentos in the cafeteria. Bring beach mats. Parking available on the school's upper field and at Palama Settlement. Information at 832-3370.

Hikes: John Cummings and Adaline Kam lead a leisurely afternoon hike up Diamond Head, May 24. Cost: $7. Reservations required. Call 955-0100.

Inger Lidman will lead experience hikers only on a Halawa Ridge hike, May 25. Seven to 10 miles long, depending on weather and trail conditions. Must be 18-years-old or older. Wear hiking shoes, sunscreen and insect repellent. Bring water, lunch and raingear. Cost: $7. Reservations required. Call 955-0100.

"Tenderfoot Hoedown": 7 to 9:15 p.m. May 25, Ala Wai Paladium. Bring pupus. Western attire encouraged. Donation. Call 689-6754.

Taiko classes: The Taiko Center of the Pacific offers classes through Kapiolani Community College. Call 737-7236.

Hawaii In-Line Skating Association: Workouts 5:30 p.m. weekdays at Kakaako Park. Call 988-5299.

Free hike to Diamond Head: Meet the Clean Air Team at the Honolulu Zoo entrance, 9 a.m. Saturdays. Three miles to the top. Call 948-3299.

Honolulu Community Drum Circle: Drummers, percussionists and dancers gather, 1 to 5 p.m. Saturdays, Keehi Lagoon Park. Potluck. Call 377-DRUM (377-3786) to confirm location each week.

Waikiki Acrobatic Troupe meets 4 p.m. Sundays at the beach across Kapiolani Park Bandstand; free workout at UH Studio Four 8 p.m. Wednesdays. Call Don Heafner at 536-7205.

Ikebana classes: Lillian Koide teaches flower arrangement 9 a.m. to noon Wednesdays at the Japanese Cultural Center. Tuition $30 per month plus supplies. Call 537-5765, evenings.

Honolulu Zoo: Zoo opens at 8 a.m. on the first and third Wednesdays of the month. General admission $6; $2 with Yum Yum Tree senior card. First Wednesdays feature a botanical tour at 8:45 a.m. for $2 more. Third Wednesdays, tai chi practice begins 8 a.m. Call 971-7174.

Nature Conservancy hikes: Two guided hikes a month to Honouliuli Preserve, home to more than 45 rare native plants and animals. Donation. Call 537-4508.
