








The Brigham Young University-Hawaii women's tennis team surged into the lead yesterday with nine victories in 10 matches at the NAIA National Championship Tournament at Tulsa, Okla. BYU-Hawaii moves into
first at NAIA tournamentThe Seasiders are in first place with 33 points, three points better than Auburn-Montgomery (Ala.).
BYU-Hawaii had singles victories from Karin Ptaszek, Paiao Short and Teresa Stromberg, giving the Seasiders three of the eight quarterfinalists.
Three BYU-Hawaii doubles teams also went 3-0 yesterday.
Anneli Ornstedt, a former NAIA singles champion, was the only BYU-Hawaii player to lose yesterday, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, to No. 1 seed Isabela Listowksi of Mobile (Ala.)
Hawaii Pacific's only remaining women's singles player, Francoise Ramos, lost to Short, 6-1, 6-1, in the round of 16, and was eliminated.
The Sea Warriors have one men's singles player left, Erik Sandblom, who won both of his matches yesterday to reach the quarterfinals.
The BYU-Hawaii men have two doubles teams left and are tied for seventh place.
JUNIOR OLYMPIC BOXING: The State Junior Olympic Boxing Championships will be held Saturday and Sunday, starting at 2 p.m. each day, at the 50th State Fair on the grounds of Aloha Stadium.
Admission is included in the cost of entry to the fair grounds.
There will be 15 champions crowned. Eight will be eligible to represent Hawaii at the National Championships in Marquette, Mich., June 16 through 21.
Headlining the card is Waipahu's Brian Viloria, the state champion at 106 pounds. Others defending their state titles will be Marc Manuel (100), Doug Ackerman (125) and Maroni Navarro (156).
ACROBATIC CHAMPIONSHIPS: The fifth Junior World Championships of Sports Acrobatics will be held Thursday through Saturday, May 29-31, at Klum Gym on the University of Hawaii campus.
The international field will include several teams from former Soviet Republic nations. This is the first sports acrobatic world championship to be awarded to a city in the United States.
Tickets are on sale at the UH Campus Center ticket office.
ALEXIO AGAIN: Dennis Alexio will headline a kickboxing card at Blaisdell Arena on Saturday, May 31, when he takes on Barrington Patterson.
Alexio is billed as the undisputed world heavyweight champion and lists a record of 64-1 with 59 KOs. Patterson, of England, comes in as the WAKO Superheavyweight European Champion with a 36-1 record and 32 KOs.
There will be seven other bouts, with action starting at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available at the Blaisdell Box Office and Connection Outlets.
HISTORIC RUN & WALK: The second annual Historic Fun Run and Walk is scheduled for Saturday, May 31, starting at 7:30 a.m. at the Kawananakoa Intermediate School playground.
There will be entertainment at each of a dozen historical sites and participants can choose between a two- or five-mile course.
The entry fee is $15 for adults, $10 for children, with proceeds benefiting Ma'ema'e Chapel.

STATE 10-K: The State 10-K Championships will be held Sunday, June 15, at 6 a.m. starting in front of the Hard Rock Cafe on Kapiolani Blvd.
Entry fee is $25 until June 1, then $30 through June 14. No race-day entries will be accepted.
The course will run from Kapiolani Blvd. to Aloha Tower and then back to McCoy Pavilion at Ala Moana Park. The men's and women's course records were set in 1994 by Sean Birren (31.46) and Darlene Mota (34.35).
POLO OPENER: The Honolulu Polo Club will open its season Sunday, June 1, at its Waimanalo facility.
The field opens at 12:30 p.m. and the public is invited to enjoy the festivities that begin at 1:30 p.m. with the traditional blessing of the horses.
The first match begins at 2:30 p.m.
