‘Crazy for You’
is a huge success

ISLE theatergoers who don't enjoy Diamond Head Theatre's "Crazy for You" could be a bit nuts. The leads in the Gershwin musical, David Spangenthal and Lolly Totero, are outstanding; the dancing is fabulous; the music is some of George and Ira Gershwin's best; the sets and costuming are impressive, and the laughs just keep coming. The big "I Got Rhythm" number is a knockout. Co-directors John Rampage and Totero and everyone involved in the show deserved the standing ovation from the packed opening-night crowd Thursday. Don't miss this one... Devon Guard was a comic delight with her domineering ways and aggressive behavior in her role. Devon's husband, Tim Guard, said, "That's how she treats me at home"... Dutchy Olsen took in the show. Years ago at Honolulu Stadium, Dutchy had the hot dog concession and I had the seat rental concession. That prompted Ruth Ann Becker to say, "You both took care of our buns"... The cast celebrated at Nick's after the show...

"MUSICAL IMAGES of Hawaii" is a book that should be in every Hawaiian music lover's library. The book contains some of the most popular Hawaiian songs, translated by the one-and-only Mahi Beamer, described by Joe DeMattos Jr. and accompanied by dramatic photographs by Kazue Kurebayashi. Gaye Beamer assisted her cousin with the English translation. The Japanese translation is by Chikao Toriyama and book design is by Kirk Pummill. The publisher is Chikao Toriyama. There will be a book signing at Kahala Barnes & Noble June 4 at 7 p.m.... Something else for Isle music fans is Mike Cord's re-release of "The Extraordinary Kui Lee" on compact disc and tape, digitally remastered and restored. The late composer-singer's classics, including "The Days of My Youth" and "I'll Remember You," are among the selections. We remember you, Kui...

So Kevin had a pair of his jockey-type shorts bronzed and put on a plaque. Kevin made the presentation at his office farewell party this week, one of many parties for the well-liked young man, who had a tough time saying aloha to colleagues...

UKI UMETANI, 9, had his dream come true by firing a hole-in-one on Hapuna's 94-yard 13th hole with a 5 wood. After the ace, he asked Mauna Kea Resort golf director Joe Root, "So how many of these have you had?" Joe doesn't have one...

Oh, brother

AFTER having worked with Hank Sato, who edited my column for more years than I care to remember, and then viewing the paintings of his brother, Tadashi Sato, at First Hawaiian's new bank building, it is easy to see which brother has the talent. Sorry, Hank. Bye...
