"Shadows and Reflections," pieces of Japanese lacquer art from a private collection, some with inlaid and carved designs, and some dating from the 16th century, on view through June 29. Free admission on the first Wednesday of each month.

"American and European Drawings and Watercolors From the Academy's Collection: 1850 - 1900," features Western graphic arts dating from the Renaissance to today. Includes works from Auguste Renoir, Paul Cezanne, Edgar Degas, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Maurice Prendergast and Winslow Homer. These works are rarely on view to minimize fading and ensure preservation. On view through July 13.

"Recent Works by Aiko Kameya and Gordon Sasaki," Honolulu painters, on view through June 8.

"The Chrysanthemum and the Sword: Japanese Samurai and Court Dolls," highlights the Japanese culture through dolls. On view through June 1.

Slide lecture: By artist Paula Rice, 7 p.m. May 28, Honolulu Academy of Arts Theatre. Part of Hawaii Craftsmen's "Raku Ho'olaule'a 1997."

Workshops: Nancy Fujioka leads two classes on the art of Mizuhiki, Japanese art of gift wrapping and ornament making, June 1 and 8. The June 1 class will cover Mizuhiki Matsu (pine) and Mizuhiki (gift-wrap design), and the June 8 class will cover Mizuhiki Ta-ke (bamboo). Both classes will be held from 10 a.m .to 3 p.m. in Room 102 of the Japanese Cultural Center's Weinberg Building. Bring craft scissors and craft needle noe pliers (if available). Adult "Pencil Drawing" classes with Patrick Ching, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 14, July 12 and Aug. 9, Naturally Hawaiian shop. Beginning to intermediate artists will learn procedure, shading and composing techniques. Bring a black and white photo of something to draw. Cost: $30 (first class); $20 (follow-up classes). "Japanese Enameling" class with Kazuko Inomata, 6 to 9 p.m. June 16-18, Japanese Cultural Center, Weinberg Building, Room 301. Students will learn basic enameling techniques focusing on cloisonne. Ho'olaule'a: Hawaii Craftsmen's 21st Annual Raku Ho'olaule'a is accepting applications for artists to participate in a weekend long beach firing and juried exhibit, May 28 through June 1. Paula Rice will be the guest artist and juror. Registration forms at 596-8128.

Campbell's Soup contest: Amateurs and professionals are encouraged to submit art or essay answering the question "What does Campbell's soup mean to you?" Winners will be slected from three groups: professional, amateur and youth. The art categories include: painting/drawing, sculpture/constructions, crafts, and all other artistic mediums. Essays must be 100 words or less. Grand prize is $10,000 and 100 shares of Campbell's Soup stock. There will also be three first prizes of $5,000 each and 15 second prizes of $1,000 each.
