Seeking new labor relations

Robbie Vorfeld is stressing teamwork at Amfac/JMB Hawaii as the company starts talks with the International Longshoremen's and Warehousemen's Union that Vorfeld says will determine the future of Amfac sugar.

"My vision for he company is to transition from the old plantation style of thinking into the more beneficial and enjoyable style of teams," Vorfeld said. He replaces Robert Heiserman, who is retiring

Vorfeld started with Amfac in 1980 as a planting supervisor for Lihue Plantation on Kauai. In 1987, he went to Pioneer Mill on Maui and managed the cultivation department. He returned to Lihue in 1992 and since 1994, Vorfield has headed agricultural operations at Pioneer Mill.

He earned a bachelor's degree in crop science/plant protection from California Polytechnic Institute in San Luis Obispo.
