








University of Hawaii softball player Dana Degen was named a second team All-American by the NCAA selection committee. Wahine Degen named
second team All-AmericanDegen, the Wahine's designated player, led the Wahine with a .410 batting average and led the Western Athletic Conference in RBIs per game with 1.03.
Degen was a first team All-Western Athletic Conference choice and an All-West Region pick.
HONORS FOR LEONI: University of Hawaii men's volleyball player Sivan Leoni has been named to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Volleyball Academic All-Conference team.
Leoni, a junior majoring in art, met the minimum criteria of a 3.0 grade-point average. He was one of 29 students honored from 13 schools.
Stanford's Mike Lambert, a Punahou graduate, also made the team.
HAYASHI WINS: Kevin Hayashi shot a 71 for a 36-hole score of 146 at the Koolau Golf Course yesterday to win the Aloha Section PGA Assistants Championship for the second year in a row.
Birdies at the 16th and 18th holes enabled Hayashi to finish one stroke ahead of first-round leader Brian Sasada, who carded a final-round 74 for a 147 total.
The Hilo Municipal pro will represent Hawaii at the National Assistants Championship at Port St. Lucie, Fla., in November.
SEASIDERS IN SECOND: The Brigham Young University-Hawaii women's tennis team was in second place after two days of competition in the NAIA National Championships yesterday at Tulsa, Okla.
The Seasiders have 23 points to 24 for Auburn-Montgomery (Ala.), but BYU-Hawaii has seven scorers -- four singles players and three doubles teams -- still in contention, while the Senators have six.
Seasiders who advanced to the fifth round were singles players Anneli Ornstedt, Karin Ptaszek, Teresa Stromberg and Paiao Short.
Hawaii Pacific's Francoise Ramos was the only Sea Warriors' woman to advance and she will play Short in today's fifth round.
In men's play, BYU-Hawaii is tied for fifth with 13 points and Hawaii Pacific is in 12th with 10 points. Mobile, Ala., leads with 20 points.
Anirban Baruah is the only Seasider remaining in singles and Erik Sandblom is the only Sea Warrior still playing.
HHSAA INVITES YOUTH: All elementary school students wearing youth league uniforms and accompanied by a paying adult will be admitted free to the Hawaii High School Athletic Association Baseball Tournament today through Saturday at Aloha Stadium.
Regular admission will be $6 for adults and $5 for students.
Stadium spokesman Les Keiter said videotapes of the HHSAA games will be available for $25 apiece.

SEASON TICKETS: Season ticket renewals for the 1997 University of Hawaii football season must be postmarked by Friday. New season ticket sales begin June 25 at the UH Special Events Arena.
The Rainbows open Aug. 30 in a 3:05 p.m. game against Minnesota at Aloha Stadium.
DRAG RACING: There will be street racing for all cars and motorcycles Friday at Hawaii Raceway Park from 6 p.m. to midnight.
The NAPA Spring Championship Drag Races are Saturday and Sunday with the gates opening at 4 p.m. and 9 a.m., respectively.

SAILING CANOES: Hawaii's premier outrigger sailing canoe race, the Ho'omana'o Challenge, will be held Sunday, starting at Kaanapali Beach at 8 a.m. and ending at Duke's Canoe Club on Waikiki Beach some six hours later.
The 75-mile race is expected to attract 22 canoes, competing for $5,000 first-place prizes in the men's and women's divisions.
GIRLS' BASKETBALL FEST: Some of the state's top women's and girls' basketball players will take part in Hannemann's fourth annual Jamboree on Saturday, May 31, at the Iolani School Gymnasium.
The Jamboree includes exhibition games as well as a competition between high school and former collegiate stars.
Action starts at 10 a.m. and continues through the championship game at 4:30 p.m. Donations will be taken at the door for the Gender Equity Sports Club.
