Elton John, Ed Lu
JUST when you thought you'd heard every strange marriage proposal story out there, along comes another one. This one occurred at the Internet Cafe on Kapahulu -- at least in part. Even though the cafe is owned by Michael Feeney, who's also a pilot for Aloha Airlines, Denelyn Edens, a Hawaiian Airlines flight attendant, is a regular customer there. She keeps in touch through cyberspace with a mainland engineer from Intel she's been seeing, Ed Erikkson. On Sunday while she was e-mailing him in San Francisco, he logged on to the establishment's "CafeCam" and saw her sitting at one of the terminals in Honolulu. Through the "CafeCam," you can converse with patrons via the computerized voice it generates. Long story short: Erikkson proposed -- electronically -- and she accepted post haste. According to her roommate, Edens was on the next flight to San Francisco ... A cyber yes to
Internet proposalTHAT luxury yacht parked off Hooters in the Aloha Tower Marketplace belongs to rocker Elton John, who at last report was in Australia doing a dual concert with Billy Joel. Apparently, plans called for him to stop off here and vacation after that gig. It's not often you see a boat where the portholes are huge picture windows, but that's Elton ... Nobody is likely to file false advertising claims against Mike Sinclair of Perfect Bodies. He's the guy who for the past several years has been working on perfecting the body of Brook Mahealani Lee. They worked together through lots of competitions leading up to her crowning as Miss Universe last week. It may not be totally perfect, but close enough ...
FOR years we've been passing out Statehood Recognition Awards to people who seem to ignore the fact that Hawaii is one of the United States. So hats off to Associated Press in its "Following Amelia" reports on the progress of aviator Linda Finch recreating the global flight of Amelia Earhart. Monday's report said she'd arrive in Hawaii on Thursday evening and stay a few days, and ended with, "She is due back in the United States on May 28." Yes, it got by sharp-eyed Star-Bulletin proofreaders ...
THE only thing missing was the band playing a march tune by John Philip Sousa. It was a regular Souza Festival at Nicholas Nickolas Sunday as local golf greats Al Souza and Stan Souza -- no relation -- celebrated their third consecutive victory as a team in the Francis Brown Four Ball tournament at the Ted Makalena Golf Course. Stan and his wife, Mary Lou, brought his parents, Sam & Kanoe Souza, while Al and wife Teri were joined by their daughter-in-law, Bernie and grandson Al Souza IV. Overseeing the service for this august group: Nicholas Nickolas Captain Al Souza III. And that's your Souza Report for today ... If you knew Souza...
WHEN he was a pitcher for the UH Rainbows, Derek Tatsuno was known for his wicked curve ball, but it sounds like he's not only given up throwing curves, but also checking them out as well. Tats finally made that ultimate pitch to Wendy Sakamoto, his long-suffering girlfriend of 12 years, and she hit it out of the park. The wedding took place Saturday. Party favors at the wedding reception were Titlist golf balls on which were inscribed the names of the bride and groom, the date and a single word: "Finally." ...
THANKS to rave reviews and brisk ticket sales, "Crazy for You," the musical featuring the music of George Gershwin, has been extended at Diamond Head Theatre. Performances have been added on June 5-7 at 8 p.m. with a matinee at 4 p.m. on June 8 ...
IT was nearly a year ago we mentioned here some astronauts with Hawaii ties. One was Ed Lu, who'd just been in town. The item went on to say Lu taught astronomy at UH for three years and coached wrestling at Punahou, adding, "He's learning Russian and may be selected to explore the MIR Russian Space Station next year." Bingo. Lu's there now, and no doubt trying out his speaking abilities in Russian on his space mates for the next few months ... Honolulu Lu
