OPENING

"Slime City": Set in Slime City during the 1930s, a female private detective and her partner are thrown into a world of backstabbing, lying insects, arachnids and other "bad guys," including Boss Centipede, Senora Tarantula and Wacko the Fireant, while solving the case of the Nile Sarcophagus. "Wild Bill and Calamity Jane, Or How the West Was Almost Lost": Presented by the Lanikai Mortgage Players. Nelson and Lucille Shreve direct this melodrama filled with song, dance and humor. Cost: $5 (includes all you can eat popcorn). At 8 p.m. Fridays through Sundays, May 16-25, Lanikai Community Park, corner of Aalapapa and Kaiolena streets. "Crazy For You": Bobby Childs, a young banker heads West to foreclose on a rundown theatre. After landing in the sleepy cow town of Deadrock, Nev., he falls in love with Polly Baker, the theatre owner's daughter, and vows to turn Deadrock into a theatrical Mecca. A Gershwin extravaganza filled with song and dance and Ken Ludwig's hilarious dialouge. Diamond Head Theatre. May 16 through June 1. Call 734-8763.

"Angels in America": 1993 Pulitzer prize winning drama about the breakup of a married Mormon couple and a "married" gay couple. Tickets: $28-$30. At 7 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays, and 4 p.m. Sundays. Play runs through May 18. Reservations at 988-6131.

"A Funny Thing Happened On the Way to the Forum": Broadway musical comedy featuring music by Stephen Sondheim. Songs include "Comedy Tonight," "Lovely" and "Everybody Ought To Have A Maid." "A'ala Park": Twenty year-old Manny wants to "get off this rock" and make a better life for himself and his girlfriend in this portrayal of a working-class family living in the 1950s. "Wishes & Wings": An animated musical adventure for the whole family. The production will introduce several of Hawaii's endangered species including the monk seal, green sea turtle and Pu'eo. "Urban Bush Women": Ensemble of African-American artists assembled by Jawole Willa Jo Zollar, explores the struggle, growth, transformation and survival of the human spirit through dance. Original play festival: The Aloha Performing Arts Center are accepting scripts for their fourth annual original play festival. Entries can be on any subject and any length but they should not have been produced before. Plays selected will be given royalty-free staged readings in August at the Aloha Theatre in Kainaliu. The selected plays will also be publicized as part of the festival. To enter, submit two typewritten copies of each entry with name, address and phone number clearly visible on the first page of each entry. Send entries to: APAC Original Paly Festival, P.O. AUDITIONS

"Paper Cranes": Open casting for short, dramatic film produced by the Student Video and Filmmakers' Association, 1 to 6 p.m. May 17, George Hall, Room 301, UH-Manoa. Various ages needed. "Paper Cranes" explores the lives, values and expectations of an Asian-American family over a 20-year period. The 16mm film is scheduled for a June-Aug. 1997 production. "Fine Dancing": Six paid acting positions open for Polynesian playwright Vilsoni Hereniko's musical. Positions include a moon goddess who is a magnificent dancer, a guitar-singing policeman, the policeman's estranged wife who is learning how to dance, a cross-dresser who plays the ukulele and sings, and two Polynesian drum performers. All actors must be Polynesian-looking. Bring dance music and be prepared to dance and sing a song, verse or chorus that demonstrates the vocal range and ability. Drummers must bring own drum. ASATAD Productions: Looking for seven men to perform in "Love! Valour! Compassion!" a Tony Award-winning comedy about a group of friends gathering to get away from it all. Script requirements include adult language and partial nudity. Some characters may need dance training.
