Akebono remains
one win off pace

TOKYO -- Yokozuna (grand champion) Takanohana, seeking his 17th tournament title, threw down lower-ranked Tochinowaka today and retained the lead at 9-1 in the 15-day Summer Grand Sumo Tournament.

Tied at 8-2 were yokozuna Akebono, or Chad Rowan from Hawaii, who beat Tosanoumi, and Asahiyutaka,

Ozeki (champion) Musashimaru, or Fiamalu Penitani from Hawaii, sent out Tamakasuga for a 7-3 mark.

Konishiki, or Salevaa Atisanoe from Hawaii, was pulled down by Kotonowaka, dropping to 6-4.

Yamato, or George Kalima from Hawaii, lost to Daihisho and is 4-6.
