Ringor, Schoales All-Americans

Senior right fielder Michele Ringor and freshman pitcher Susie Schoales of Hawaii Pacific University were named to the 20-member NAIA First Team All-America softball squad yesterday.

Ringor became only the second Sea Warriors player to repeat as a first-teamer. Pitcher Lisa Shandy did it in '93 and '95.

Hawaii Pacific's Lynnette Williams, a sophomore shortstop, and Felisa Pascua, a junior first baseman, received honorable mention.

Kim Ishihara, a junior utility player for HPU, was selected to the All-America Scholar-Athlete team for her 3.62 grade-point average in International Studies.

HONORS FOR SEASIDERS: Three Brigham Young University-Hawaii tennis players and their coach received awards at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association banquet that kicks off the NAIA National Championships in Tulsa, Okla.

Teresa Stromberg received the Arthur Ashe Award for her 24-0 singles record and 21-2 doubles mark, as well as her academic performance and citizenship. Karin Ptaszek was named Rookie of the Year after a 22-3 regular-season singles record and 21-1 doubles mark. Paiao Short received the Player to Watch Award for her 25-1 singles record and 21-1 doubles mark.

BYU-Hawaii's coach, David Portner, was named ITA Coach of the Year.

For the Seasider women, Ptaszek, Stromberg, Short, Anneli Ornstedt, Yu-Hsien Liu and Jenny Tielman all advanced through yesterday's second round of singles.

For the men's team, Anirban Baruah, Wei-Yu Su, Toshi Matsui, Matt Griffin, Todd Hooper and Derek Wildman advanced through the first round of singles. The second round was rained out.

SASADA LEADS: Brian Sasada of Makena Golf Course shot a 73 for a two-stroke lead after the first round of the 36-hole Assistants Championship played at Ko'olau Golf Course yesterday.

Kevin Hayashi of Hilo Municipal was at 75, followed by Ko Olina's Brad Buck at 76.
