Three records broken at state track meet Punahou athletes set new standards in the shot put, discus and 400-meter dash
By Pat Bigold
Star-BulletinThe Punahou boys opened defense of their Hawaii High School Athletic Association track and field championship yesterday by trashing three state records at the Kaiser High School oval. Buffanblu athletes now hold records for the shotput, discus and the 400-meter dash.
The state finals begin tomorrow at noon at Kaiser.
Tim McAndrews, former owner of the shotput and discus marks, got special satisfaction out of the fact that he coaches Mike Souza and Kaione Crabb, the athletes who broke his 30-year-old records.
"It feels great," said McAndrews, who suffers from Parkinson's Disease but has been helping head coach Dacre Bowen with the weightmen for the past three seasons.
"Actually it's because I've worked very hard with these kids, and I'm glad I had the good fortune to have athletes like them to help me through my years as a coach. I enjoy their success."
Crabb, who broke McAndrews' 1967 shotput record of 58-61/2 with a toss of 59-8, smiled, listening to the man whose advice he says was invaluable to him.
"If coach feels good about it (breaking the record), then I feel good about it, too," said Crabb.
McAndrews quickly added that he thinks Crabb, the defending state champ, can better the record tomorrow.
"I want him to break 60 again in the finals," McAndrews said. "I know he can do it because he tosses that far every day in practice."
Crabb, who became the first Hawaii prep athlete to put the shot farther than 60 feet a few weeks ago at the Punahou Relays, will attend UCLA on a track and field scholarship.
Souza, who will play football for Northwestern, broke McAndrews' discus record of 177-51/2 with an effort of 180-1.
There were four qualifiers with throws of 170 feet or more: Souza, Crabb (174-6), defending state champion Ed Taamu of Iolani (173-10) and St. Louis' Joe Siofele (170-10).
Souza, Crabb and Taamu are listed among the nation's top 35 discus athletes.
Both McAndrews and Souza said they think the winning throw tomorrow will surpass Souza's mark of 180-1.
"I'm trying to mentally prepare myself to beat this throw," Souza said.
In the third record-setting performance of the day, Bennett Valencia, a junior, clocked 48.67 in the 400 to eclipse the 1985 400-meter mark of 49.0 set by Radford's John Curry.
But Valencia said he "ran into a wall" of a head wind when he made the final turn to the finish. "I just had to power through it," he said.
Iolani's Erin Stovall qualified for the finals in six events. Her best efforts were in the long jump (18-11), the 100 meters (12.09), and the 200 meters (25.16).
Her most difficult events were the 100-meter hurdles, where she stumbled on the second-to-last hurdle but still won the heat, and in the 4x400 relay. In the relay, Stovall was next to last receiving the baton for her anchor leg. But she exploded past four runners to give Iolani third in the heat and a sixth-place qualifying slot.
Stovall also anchored Iolani's 4x100 relay team to a 50.99 clocking, the best time of the day.
Punahou's Eri Macdonald ran from behind in the anchor leg to give Punahou the top qualifying time (4:09.72) in the 4x400 relay.
Punahou's Victoria Chang qualified comfortably with the best times of the day in the 1,600 (5:27.16) and the 3,200 (12:05.70). Both times were well off her season personal bests.
