Billy Joel / Jeremy Harris
NO matter what she accomplishes in life as an artist, Carol Beegan will be forever known in some circles as the woman who became sloe-eyed singer Billy Joel's girlfriend after he and gorgeous model Christie Brinkley divorced. Artist Beegan breezed into Honolulu with Joel as he was en route to Australia to perform on a double bill with Elton John. She opted to stay over rather than proceed Down Under so she could visit with her childhood chum Lorraine Fabro, wife of local actor Warren Fabro, and see Caleigh and Delia, the Fabro twins she heard so much about. This was Beegan's first trip to the islands and she was glad she got to spend quality time with her old College Point, Queens, schoolmate. She also saw the Kumu Kahua production of Ed Sakamoto's "A'ala Park," which stars Fabro and Ray Bumatai. And in keeping with New York tradition, a visit to an Irish pub was mandatory, so Beegan, the Fabros and Bumatai all strolled a block down Merchant Street to Murphy's for a Guinness ... Artist's isle visit just Fabro-lous
SPEAKING of Murphy's, there was a car parked across the street from there one day this week, and standing alongside it were two young women we in less enlightened times might have called damsels in distress. The hood was up and one of the women held a wrench, which she'd been wielding to little effect in the engine area. A car stopped and out popped none other than Mayor Jeremy Harris, who has a reputation of being something of a fixer-upper. My spy was circling the block, looking for that elusive parking place so difficult to come by in the area, and when he returned to that corner, unsuccessful in his quest, the mayor, the two women and their car were gone. Mission accomplished. Better yet, a parking place opened ...
IF KHNL calls its sister station, "K-5 The Home Team," we should call Channel 8 "The Homer Team." KHNL will be airing Homer's "The Odyssey" - and he even gets billing! - Sunday and Monday nights. Homer, however, had no say in the casting of such folks as Armand Asante, Vanessa Williams, Isabella Rossellini and Geraldine Chaplin ...
AT one time attorney David Schutter was asking $29 million for his Kahala estate, and though it sold for much less than that, its price tag makes the one on Mike Tyson's digs look paltry by comparison. Century 21 has Tyson's Farmington, Conn., estate, a 56,000-square-foot mansion, for sale with an asking price of $22 million. But look what it includes: 20 bedrooms, 24 full baths, 14 half-baths, seven gourmet kitchens, five dining rooms, four conference rooms, a state-of-the-art dance club, an indoor Olympic pool and health club facilities that include a racquetball court and shooting range. Outdoor amenities include an NBA regulation-sized basketball court, tennis court, large pond with waterfall and boathouse, a guest house and a staff lodge. Nice bachelor pad, n'est-ce pas? ... Mikey likes it
I AGREE totally with UH football coach Fred vonAppen that far too much has been written about the arrest of quarterback Tim Carey for being in a gambling game in a Chinatown walk-up. It's a given that 22-year-olds, be they football players or not, make dumb mistakes in life. This surely was one and Carey has apologized for it. One question remains, however: Who took him to that game and why? It's not the kind of place a college student would wander into off the street. Answer that question, and let the "chips" fall where they may ...
A COUPLE with strong Hawaii ties have become parents in Urbana, Ill., and have given their daughter a queenly name. Earl and Angela Neller named their newborn Emma Kahalepaiwi. The baby's grandfather is William Mokahi Steiner, director of the National Biological Service in Hawaii. Mom worked at Bishop Museum where she was in charge of archaeological collections. Dad was a state archaeologist concentrating on historic sites, was a cultural specialist for OHA and an archaeologist at Kalaupapa National Historical Park ... Queenly name
