University of Hawaii quarterback Tim Carey has been suspended indefinitely by athletic director Hugh Yoshida while Yoshida investigates his involvement in a Chinatown dice game.

Carey was among 11 people arrested in a gambling raid last Friday. His arraignment was this morning in District Court. He posted $200 bail on misdemeanor gambling charges.

Coach Fred VonAppen said that the suspension would last until an internal investigation that likely will involve the conduct committee is completed.

Last December, that committee helped Yoshida determine the punishment for running back Quincy Jacobs for his involvement in a brawl in the Aloha Stadium stands during the UH-Brigham Young football game.

VonAppen said last night he wasn't happy that Carey was involved in an illegal gambling operation. He said Carey was apologetic for his actions, but that some kind of punishment would eventually take place.

"That will be determined once we have all the facts in front of us," vonAppen said. "Obviously, we don't condone our players' involvement in this type of thing."

"We are currently gathering all the necessary information and will be conducting an investigation shortly," Yoshida said yesterday in a press release.

Although the UH student handbook doesn't specifically refer to playing dice, it reads, "You should keep in mind that your participation in gambling interests, even in the most minor fashion, may jeopardize your athletic career."
