in bludgeon slaying of Manoa manA convicted felon on parole from California may be charged in the Saturday hammer beating death of a man at the University Avenue Burger King. The 33-year-old suspect was arrested last night while in custody for an unrelated auto theft on the Windward side. The man, who has no permanent local address, has had prior arrests for domestic violence and theft.
The man was paroled on March 16, 1996, California Department of Corrections officials said today.
They said he never checked in with his parole officer, and has been at large since last year. However, police here said the man moved to Hawaii legally three months ago.
Police said the suspect was arrested while driving a stolen car yesterday, and was later arrested in connection with the death of Paul Ulbrich, 44, of Manoa. Ulbrich was attacked while sitting at a table outside the Burger King shortly before 7 a.m. Saturday.
Witnesses said the attacker fled down Metcalf Street, and investigators found the hammer in in the back parking lot of the restaurant.
