Hawaii jobless will file
claims by phone

Hawaii's unemployed won't have to make trips to the unemployment office to file for their unemployment checks. In a couple of years, all they'll have to do is pick up the phone.

U.S. Secretary of Labor Alexis Herman said yesterday that Hawaii was awarded a $1 million grant to set up a system to allow dislocated workers to file their initial claims by phone.

Besides saving people time, the new system will save employers money by reducing the costs of program administration, Herman said.

"Telephone claim systems bring us another step closer to fulfilling our promise to transform the unemployment system into a re-employment system for the American worker," Herman said.

Kalihi to get state's
first Samoan bank

PAGO PAGO, American Samoa - Hawaii's estimated 25,000 Samoans can expect to have their own Samoan bank in the islands next week.

Amerika Samoa Bank plans to open its first off-island branch in Kalihi on Monday.

Many of the people in Hawaii's growing Samoan community aren't being served by local banks that understand the Samoan culture, said bank President Harold Fielding. That has made it difficult for Samoan businesses to get loans, he said.
