Vicky Cayetano, Terrance Tom

GOP can’t find
Vicky on its roles

MUCH ado about huh? It seemed to be noteworthy when Vicky Cayetano, Hawaii's new First Lady, announced she was switching affiliations from the Republicans to the Democrats. One reason was because members of the GOP are forbidden to campaign for Democrats, and Mrs. Cayetano has every intention of backing her husband publicly. But hold on there! If she's a member of the Republican Party, it's a surprise to outgoing GOP head Jane Tatibouet, who says she can find her name on no GOP membership role. Since 1978, voters have not had to register as a member of one party or another to vote in the primary, and some Republicans theorize her "affiliation switch" to the Democrats was just so much smoke and a kind of preemptive strike should her name turn up somewhere. But according to Tatibouet, it hasn't ...

BY the way, did you notice that the New York Giants have signed a guard named Cayetano Castro. "After he retires," quoth one wag, "he plans to be both governor of Hawaii and president of Cuba." ... More politico notes: Hemp cookies were being passed around during the closing days of the legislature and one critic, Rep. Terrance Tom, said they "reinforced the 'Just Say No' program." Furthermore, John Radcliffe quipped that Mrs. Fields and Famous Amos have nothing to worry about, tastewise ... And in a curtain speech at the conclusion of Ed Sakamoto's "A'ala Park" at Kumu Kahua, Rep. Marcus Oshiro read a proclamation from the state House of Representatives recognizing the author's body of work reflecting life in Hawaii ...

DID you hear they're doing a new version of "Robinson Crusoe" on Kauai this summer? It's called "Six Days/Seven Nights," and stars Harrison Ford and Anne Heche, new off-screen love interest of Ellen DeGeneres. Ford and Heche end up on an isolated island after a plane crash and she sets out in search of Nancy Friday. (I made up that part.) ...

Life in the diamond lane

INVITES to the wedding of Maui Realtor Joe Kealoha to Sarah Barrica stated the ceremony would begin at 11:30 a.m. When lobbyist Red Morris and wife Gail arrived at 11:45 a.m., they encountered Realtor Jimmy Kometani and wife Momi departing, saying the ceremony was pau. Rockne Freitas reminded Morris that not everything is on "Hawaiian time" even for an ex-OHA chairman like Kealoha. Eddie Auld commented it felt good at 57 to be "best man" again. Highlight was when the bride and groom repaired to Rumours for dancing -- at 5 p.m.! ...

BON VIVANT Paul Diller took his 19-year-old son Josh back to San Francisco, where he and the Diller clan celebrated Paul's 60th birthday. On the way back to Honolulu, each entered the half-way sweepstakes game for the first time, and when it was announced on the public address system that Josh was the winner, he cried out, "Show me the money!" Guess what film was shown on the plane? All who said, "Jerry Maguire," step to the head of the class. No money, but Josh did get a bottle of champagne out of the deal. Now all he has to do is keep it away from Dad until he's 21 ...

LOCALITE Peggy Kehoe Buchwach, in Florida visiting friends, looked up former City Auditoriums Director Guido Salmaggi and the two lunched at the trendy Sarasota Yacht Club. Guido is off to New York next week to sing "Ave Maria" at his sister's 50th wedding anniversary, after which he and wife return to their Honolulu home for the summer.

Blanketed with security

SECURITY was so tight at the Gloria Estefan concert that one of the singer's longtime friends, Carmen Lopez, V.P. and managing director of New Yorker Magazine, couldn't get backstage after the concert to say hello. Fortunately, Lopez (who grew up with Emilio Estefan in Cuba) was spotted by Gloria as the singer's mini-van was driving by and she was whisked inside and they drove off together. New Yorker had just hosted 30 of Hawaii's top tourism marketing people at a preconcert party at the stadium and things could have ended badly ...
