YWCA packs up a
‘power lunch’

THE theme today, if there is one, is women, kids and siblings. Never mind the missing ingredient in this mix -- men get enough attention as it is. It'll be the ultimate "power lunch" in honor of women at the Hilton Hawaiian Village tomorrow. Honorees at the YWCA LeaderLuncheon are ethnobotanist Beatrice Krauss, Honolulu Symphony exec director Lynne Johnson, and Rose Nakamura, founder of Project Dana, a provider of volunteer caregivers for the disabled and elderly. Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children and St. Andrew's Priory School for Girls also will be honored for contributions to the advancement of women ...

AS for kids, Timmy Leong, operator of Timmy's Gym for 44 years, is concerned about what he considers false assertions that weight training for kids can lead them to become muscle bound and growth stunted, and can lead to risk of injury in other sports. Timmy insists that sensible strength training with weights while properly supervised is a positive for kids, especially during growth stages between the ages of 10 and 20 ... Meanwhile, casting director Garrison True is planning film and TV acting workshops this summer for local youths from 8 to 18, and is hosting a series of free guidance seminars for parents of aspiring young actors this month at Actors Inc. Studios in Aiea. For more info call 484-2284 ...

AND as for siblings, Audra Lee Janairo is following in the steps of her more famous sister, Tia Carrere, and will be modeling in a Schuler Homes commercial which begins airing this month. Tia, who started her acting career as a teenage model in Hawaii, has appeared in numerous big films like "Rambo II" and is currently shooting a film in Canada with co-star Dean Cain ... When Jim Cone of Matrix Media brought his (very) pregnant wife Debbie to Nick's Fishmarket for dinner, G.M. David Nagaishi personalized their menus, welcoming "Jim, Debbie and Baby Cone." The Cones decided against "Ice Cream" as a first name, and settled on Chandler Celeste ...

A wedding and two funerals

PUNAHOU grad Jennifer Nicholson (her dad is actor Jack Nicholson) and Mark Norfleet, parents of a 1-year-old, are planning a wedding over the Labor Day weekend. And honeymooning in the Virgin Islands? ... You can bet those attending the services for the late Art Good tomorrow night at St. Andrew's Cathedral will have spotlessly shined shoes. Good was the gent behind Arts Professional Shoe Salon, and in his day shined some of the most expensive and best cared for shoes in town ... Ashes will be scattered at 5:15 p.m. today beyond the reef in front of the Royal Hawaiian Hotel after services at St. Andrew's for Pat Pitzer, editor of Spirit of Aloha magazine, who died a week ago. Bagpiper Larry Coleman agreed to lead the procession out of the cathedral on behalf of Pitzer, who was a member of the Royal Scottish Country Dancers ...

WHEN Matteo's G.M. Russell Druce got a call from a frequent visitor from Boston asking for a reservation for 50 for New Year's Eve, he was impressed that people plan that far ahead. Then the other shoe dropped. That's for New Year's Eve 1999, said the frequent guest, already preparing for the new millennium ... Tara Holland, Miss America 1997, is in town on behalf of Hawaii Literacy, and after a read- and sing-along today at Mayor Wright Housing, will be guest of honor at Hawaii Literacy's annual fund-raiser tonight at the Japanese Chamber of Commerce. Nothing like the tulips of Holland ...

April showers

THE people behind "Christmas in April" report their big day April 26 was a huge success with 1,300 volunteers pitching in to renovate and repair 24 homes for residents who needed help. Two dozen homeowners appreciated the donation of time, skills and material assistance by so many who made the day possible. This, it's reported in a "thank you" letter, despite the fact that "frequent showers made the work more difficult." But think how clean those volunteers must have been when they finished ...
