All eyes are on Parker McLachlin, the hottest young golfer in the state, and Punahou in the 32nd David Ishii/Hawaii High School Athletic Association golf tournament which started this morning on the Wailua Golf Course on Kauai.

McLachlin, the UCLA-bound defending state champion, seeks to become the third player to win back-to-back state crowns while helping the Buffanblu capture a third consecutive state team title.

The Wailua course is familiar to McLachlin, who shot 68-74--142 to become the state junior champion there last June.

"You have to be smart and have some length, and your chipping and putting have to be real good," he said.

"There is a lot of wind on the front nine, out by the ocean. The back nine is sheltered by trees. The par 4s you have to play real well because they're long."

Punahou is a decided favorite in the tournament which finishes tomorrow.

The Buffanblu have the top three average golfers from the tough Interscholastic League of Honolulu: McLachlin (70.2), sophomore Jim Seki (72.4) and University of Tennessee scholarship athlete Anna Umemura (72.8).

"This is a very strong team," said Umemura.

For her, this state tournament means a lot. She said it was agony for her to have to sit back and watch last year's tournament. A bout with tendinitis sidelined Unemura for the entire season.

"It was very hard for me to watch," said Umemura.

She said the wind conditions concerned her yesterday during the practice round.

"The wind was kicking up and the weather doesn't good out here," she said.

"It started to rain a little."

Unemura would like to regain the state girls' title she won as a freshman and sophomore. Kamehameha's Elisha Au took the title last year.

Other teams to watch in the state tournament include Waiakea, host Kauai high, and Kamehameha.

OIA BASEBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS: The Oahu Interscholastic Association baseball championships open at four home sites today.

The tournament semifinals on May 16 and the finals on May 17 will be at Aloha Stadium.

Last year, the Knights won their first OIA title since 1968 with a 14-4 victory over Aiea at Aloha Stadium.
