FRIDAY

"The Beauty and the Beast": Act One Children's Theater, consisting of children from Kainalu and Lanikai Elementary schools and Le Jardin Academy, will present the musical, 7 p.m., Kainalu Elementary School. Tickets: $2. Reservations at 261-0457.



SATURDAY

Investigator training: What do you do if an animal needs help? Learn basic rescue techniques and how to identify signs that an animal needs assistance during the Pet Expo, 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. May 10-11, Blaisdell Center, near the Hawaiian Humane Society booth. There also will be crafts, items for sale, free cat and dog ID tags and a free "Permanent Pet Record." Information at 946-2187.



SUNDAY

Tribute to animal mommies: Three- to 5-year-olds can search for animal moms and watch them raise their families, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., Hawaii Nature Center. Cost: $7. Reservations required. Call 955-0100.



CONTEST

Spelling bee: Children in fourth through eighth grades (in school year 1997 to 1998) are welcomed to register for the Hawaiian Spelling Bee being held 10 a.m. to noon Sept. 27, Ward Warehouse Amphitheater. Contestants will be required to spell and define Hawaiian words. Winner will receive a computer for his or her class and a class party. Limited to 20 participants. COOL SUMMER FUN!

Here are still more possibilities for the summer for kids.:

Honolulu Theatre For Youth: "Stage One," a beginner class for children ages 7 to 12, and "Stage Two," an advanced class for students ages 13 to 18, explore stage craft. Classes 1 to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, June 16 to July 25, Temple Emanu-El, 2550 Pali Highway. Cost: $430. Apply by May 16. Call 839-9885.

Windward Nazarene Academy: Kindergarteners through third graders learn Hawaiiana, crafts, cooking and games. Fourth through seventh graders have an academic enrichment program, sports, excursions and computer basics. Cost: $195-$405 (includes lunch). Deadline: 4 p.m., May 30. Call 235-8787.

Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii: Japanese culture class for ages 6 to 12, 9 a.m. to noon Saturdays, June 14 to Aug. 30, Weinberg Building, Room 102. Cost: $100 per student plus class supplies.

Temple Emanu-El: Gan Yerushalayim, a Jewish preschool, offers field trips, science, cooking, art, sports and puppetry for ages 3 and 4, 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., June 16 to Aug. 22. Register at 595-7521.

Hanalani Schools: Program from June 16 to July 25 provides outdoor activities, crafts and music, weekly field trips. Classes 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays; and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Fridays. Before-school care begins at 6:45 a.m. and after-school care ends at 5:30 p.m. Call 625-2855 (for 3-4 year olds); or 623-7771 (elementary-aged children).

Honolulu Academy of Arts: "Exploring Two and Three Dimensional Art" for kindergarten through fourth grade; "Drawing and Painting" for grades 5-12; "Ceramics" for grades 4-6; and "Parent-Child Classes" for children ages 3-5 accompanied by an adult, June 17 through July 26. Salvation Army: Four one-week camp sessions for children ages 6 to 12, June 26 to July 22, Camp Homelani. Cost: $65 per week.

Music camp for ages 8 through high school, July 26 to Aug. 3, offers training for brass, guitar, ukulele, group singing and tambourine. Cost: $90. Call 988-2136 or 637-4131.

Winner's Camp Foundation (Kauai): Seven-day program to enhance academic performance and social skills through leadership, Aug. 4-10, Kauai Beachboy Hotel Resort. For 13- to 17-year-olds. Cost: $980. Information at 263-0177 (Oahu).

Oahu Tae Kwon Do Center: Four-week program that meets 3 times a week at 6 to 7 p.m. or 7 to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday. Also meets 10 to 11 a.m. Saturdays. Call 486-2500.
