Kaiwi Records Fall

Mary Smolenski, above, and Jim Foti, below, helped paddle
their teams to record times in the Kaiwi Channel Relay yesterday
from Kaluakoi resort on Molokai to Magic Island. Foti and his
brother, John, covered the 40.2 mile stretch of open ocean in
4 hours, 40 minutes, 46 seconds, breaking the old record by
more than 14 minutes. Smolenski and her partners Nicole Wilcox
and Lori Stewart set a women's record with a time of 5:43:31,
breaking the previous record by more than half an hour.
