REDWOOD CITY, Calif. -- Microsoft Corp. today said it plans to work with Hewlett-Packard Co. and VeriFone Inc. to develop Internet commerce products. Microsoft, VeriFone, HP
work on 'Net commerceMicrosoft said the collaboration will yield pilot and production products based on the secure electronic transaction protocol standard, allowing merchants to set up Internet storefronts, accept Internet payments and conduct SET transactions over the World Wide Web. Financial details were not disclosed.
Microsoft said it will bring its desktop presence and provide merchant commerce software to the alliance while HP will contribute hardware and software systems, and VeriFone will supply its Internet payment products and technology.
The SET protocol, originally created by Visa and MasterCard, is being developed by Visa, MasterCard, VeriFone and other companies as an emerging standard for Internet bank card transactions.
Hewlett-Packard last month announced a $1.15 billion buy-out bid for VeriFone.
LOS ANGELES -- Northrop Grumman Corp. has agreed to buy Logicon Inc., a provider of high-tech equipment and services for the military, for about $725 million in stock. Northrup Grumman
buying Logicon Inc.Los Angeles-based Northrop will exchange between 0.6919 and 0.5661 of its shares for each Logicon share, depending on Northrop's average stock price during a 30-day period prior to notification of Logicon stockholders. Torrance, Calif.-based Logicon specializes in surveillance, precision strike and battle management equipment.
