Some fun events for celebrating Lei Day
Department of Parks and Recreation: "Na Lei Mae'ole," meaning never fading lei, is the theme of Honolulu's 70th Annual Lei Celebration to be held at Queen Kapiolani Park. The schedule is as follows: 7:30 to 9 a.m., receiving of lei entries; 10 to 10:45 a.m., Royal Hawaiian Band concert; 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Hoolaulea exhibits and demonstrations; 11 a.m. to noon, lei queen Gina Malia Nobrega investiture program; noon to 3 p.m., Hawaiian Steel Guitar Association concert; noon to 5 p.m., main stage entertainment; noon to 6 p.m. lei exhibit; and 3:30 to 6 p.m., youth lei contest.
The main stage entertainers include Anuenue Elementary School Hawaiian Immersion Program, noon to 12:45 p.m.; Na Leo Nahenahe 'O Kupuna, 12:45 to 1:15 p.m.; Kipapa Elementary School Environmental Drama Program, 1:15 to 1:45 p.m.; King Intermediate School Halau Ka Ua Kilihune, 1:45 to 2:30 p.m.; Campbell High School Polynesian Performers, 2:30 to 3:15 p.m.; Halau Ha'a Hula 'O Kahale I Na Pua Hala 'O Kahala, 3:15 to 4 p.m.; and Halau Hula 'O Hokulani (including Ho'okupu presentations), 4 to 5 p.m.
At 9 a.m. May 2, all contest leis will be placed on the tombs and crypts of the Ali'i at the Royal Mausoleum on Nuuanu Avenue. A short ceremony will be held with the lei queen and her court. Information at 523-4156.
Hale Koa Hotel: Lei day celebration begins at 8:30 a.m. with lei-making lessons in the hotel's Banyan Tree Courtyard. Hundreds of fresh flowers are available for guests to string their own leis to be judged in a contest. Entertainment begins 9:30 with employees performing. Hawaiian lunch will follow in the KoKo Cafe with entertainment provided by the Army's 25th Infantry Division (Light) Stage Band. Information at 955-9428.
Hawaii Prince Hotel: "E Kulike Kakou," meaning together as one, 2 to 6 p.m. in the hotel's lobby. There will be crafts, lei contests and entertainment. The May Day program will begin at 4 p.m. Free. Call 531-0244.
Native Books & Beautiful Things: Aunty Phoebe and Bill Char will demonstrate lei making, 7 to 10 a.m., 222 Merchant St. Leis will also be distributed to visitors of the book store.
From noon to 1 p.m. the next day, all entrants in the lei contest will adorn the downtown May Day Court with their leis. Fashion designers will dress four downtown women to represent Oahu, Hawaii, Kauai and Maui, as well as May Queen Julliette Galuteria. Outrigger Waikiki on the Beach: Arts and crafts, lei making and ono food are available from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 2335 Kalakaua Ave. Lomi lomi-style massages will also be available to guests of the hotel. The entertainers include: Na Ho'okele, 9 to 9:30 a.m.; the Company Services employee choir, 10 to 10:30 a.m.; Hui Malama, 10:30 to 11 a.m.; Outrigger Waikiki Choir and Management 'Ukulele band, 11:30 a.m. to noon; Outrigger Village Halau Hula Ku'i Kulana Kahale Wa'a, noon to 12:30 p.m.; and the Pearl City High School 'Ukulele Band, 12:30 to 1 p.m. Information at 921-9747.
