OPENING

"To Kill A Mockingbird": The Kamehameha Schools Bishop Estate Performing Arts department and Keaka Kamehameha (Kamehameha Secondary School Drama Club) presents this story of a young black man (Mauna Kea Higuera Trask) who has been accused of raping a young white woman (Amanda Luning and Kahau Hook). When Atticus Finch (Kai Anderson) is asked to represent Trask, he and his family encounter problems in the intolerant south. At 7:30 p.m. April 25-26, Princess Ruth Ke'elikolani Auditorium. Cost: $5. "The Grapes of Wrath": Tony award-winning adaptation of John Steinbeck's novel about an Oklahoma family and their odyssey across country in search for a better life. The University of Hawaii at Manoa's Department of Theatre and Dance presents this Depression-era tale at 8 p.m. April 25-26, and May 1-3; and 2 p.m. May 4 at Kennedy Theatre. "Happy Birthday Mr. Shakespeare!": In celebration of Shakespeare's 433rd birthday, Terence Knapp organized a production of scenes and songs along with the University of Hawaii at Manoa's Department of Theatre and Dance. "Laughter on the 23rd Floor": Asatad presents a play by Neil Simon that recreates the mayhem and non-stop gags of a team of comedy writers as they hammer out a weekly TV show. Honolulu Theatre for Youth Workshops: Helen White and Chris Vine host two workshops, April 26-27. "Playbuilding With Youth...An Introduction to Strategies for Creating Original Theatre for Young People" will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 26; and "Teaching Through Drama...A Practical Introduction to the Use of Drama As A Teaching Tool Across the Curriculum" will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 27. Recommended for classroom and drama teachers and theatre artists who have an interest in working with young people. Cost: $20 per workshop or $30 for both. Reservations at 839-9885.

Original play festival: The Aloha Performing Arts Center are accepting scripts for their fourth annual original play festival. Entries can be on any subject and any length but they should not have been produced before. Plays selected will be given royalty-free staged readings in August at the Aloha Theatre in Kainaliu. The selected plays will also be publicized as part of the festival. AUDITIONS

Manoa Valley Theatre: Eight men and eight women of various ages are needed to perform in "Prom Queens Unchained," a play set in the 1950s and consisting of a competition for the prom queen title, an alien invader, a science student who turns his right arm into a hamburger, murders, and other mayhem. All actors must sing and dance and casting will be based on stage presence, an ability to work in an ensemble, and the ability to sing harmony. Auditioners are asked to read the script prior to auditions and have a song prepared either from the show or other popular music. Scripts available for perusal, 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, Manoa Valley Theatre office. Auditions at 1 p.m. April 26-27, Bakken Auditorium, Mid-Pacific Institute, 2445 Kaala Street.
