Cayetano kicks off 'Newsmakers'

A new series, "Newsmakers Live!", begins 6:30 p.m. tomorrow on KHNL/NBC, with a discussion with Gov. Ben Cayetano.

The half-hour program, hosted by Dan Cooke, is designed to present Hawaii decision-makers in a live discussion format with selected guests. Joining Cooke tomorrow are political analyst Dan Boylan and reporters Richard Borreca of the Star-Bulletin and Lyle Galdeira of KHNL.

In style 'round the clock

Designs geared to take modern women from day to night will highlight the annual fashion show staged by University of Hawaii at Manoa Textiles and Clothing Program students.

"Night and Day" begins at 11:30 a.m. tomorrow at the Hawaiian Village Coral Ballroom IV, and will feature lunch and a dance presentation as well.

Creations by senior designers Karen Hayashi, Joni Kinoshita, Noelani Salis and Lori Uehara will be shown. Tickets are $25.

A free display of the designers' collections and bridal wear by Bernard Foong will be open to the public 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the ballroom reception hall.

Houston returns to Honolulu

Whitney Houston will perform in concert at 8 p.m. May 29 at Aloha Stadium.

Houston announced the concert date yesterday at her first video tele-conference. This will be her only U.S. concert on a May tour that includes Asia and Australia. The Honolulu date is presented by Blockbuster Hawaii.

Houston last performed in Hawaii nearly a decade ago.

She said that husband Bobby Brown, a rap performer, would join her on stage for the first time.

Tickets go on sale at the stadium at midnight tonight and are limited to eight per person. Admission is $65, $45, $35 and $20.

Freshen up at the Row

Isle farmers have laid siege to the Row Bar. The yuppie enclave is surrounded three days weekly by purveyors of farm-fresh produce, just-caught fish, colorful bouquets, Hawaiian quilts, koa and other crafts.

The Restaurant Row open market is open from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Last Friday's wares featured Kahuku apple bananas from 70 cents a pound, bright red Maui tomatoes for $1 a bag, pak choy for $1 a bunch, whole ehu fish for $2.95 a pound and purple anthuriums for $3 a bunch -- with live steel-drum music in the background.

Hawaii stars
talk story on 'Moments'

"Emme's Island Moments" this month -- "Reaching for the Stars" -- takes an up close look at three Hawaii residents who have achieved show business success far beyond the island shores.

Sacred Hearts Academy graduate-turned actress Tia Carrere, a Brown Bags to Stardom winner, talks about making movies with the likes of Sean Connery and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Miss USA Brook Lee, who as a beauty contestant danced the Beer Barrel Polka Hula in front of a nationwide audience, talks about the upcoming Miss Universe Pageant. And Emme's co-host singer Glenn Medeiros, also a Brown Bags to Stardom winner, talks about what has brought him home and what it's like working with comedian Frank DeLima.

"Emme's Island Moments" airs 9 p.m. tomorrow on KHON/FOX and again at 4 p.m. Saturday.

Kahuku High celebrates 100

Kahuku High School will celebrate its centennial year from 1 p.m. to midnight May 2 at the Polynesian Cultural Center.

The festivities will include a tour of the center, dinner, a dance and an alumni tent show.

Luau pleasures

Food and fashions will be featured at the fund-raiser, "Pleasures in Paradise: A Luau Extravaganza," May 3 at the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel.

The event is a benefit for the Associated Chinese University Women scholarship fund.

Boutiques will sell clothing, accessories, hand-crafted items and art, and a country store, garden shop and lei stands will open at 8:30 a.m. The luau and program will begin at 11:15 a.m. There also will be a silent auction.

Tickets are $40; gold sponsorship with ramp-side seating is $600 for a table of 10.

Filipino celebration

The 5th annual Filipino Fiesta and Parade takes place 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. May 3 at Kapiolani Park. The theme this year's is "The Philippine Centennial."

A community health fair will be held in conjunction with the fiesta. There will be testing for blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, glaucoma, thyroid, gout and other conditions along with health education information and demonstrations.

The fiesta will feature foods from various regions in the Philippines; cultural programs such as paintings, arts and crafts, martial arts and prized roosters; and entertainment.

The parade will begin at 9 a.m. at the Ewa end of Ala Moana park, down Ala Moana Boulevard, through Waikiki on Kalakaua to Kapiolani Park.

Reichel in concert

Singer-composer-chanter Keali'i Reichel will perform with O'Brien Eselu at 10:15 p.m. May 15 at the Polynesian Cultural Center. Eselu is a kumu hula and recording artist.

The concert will take place during the 5th World Fire Knife Dance Competition at the center.

Tickets are $10 and are available at the center's box office and at the center's ticket kiosk at the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center. Information: 293-3333.

St. Louis puts on fair

St. Louis School will put on its annual Ohana Festival benefit, dubbed "Planet Pohaku," May 2 and 3 at Gerber Field House on the school campus in Kaimuki.

The festival runs from 2 to 10:30 p.m. May 2 and from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. May 3.

Admission and parking is free.

There will be live entertainment, food booths, miniature golf, a country store selling fresh flowers and produce and craft sales.
