Neighbors calling cops
would help protect fence

On Vineyard Boulevard, fronting the Buck Toy Club, the chain-link fence again is torn open, creating a hazard for motorists because people jaywalk from Mayor Wright Homes at all times of the day and night. Why can't they do something to prevent this, either alarms or landscaping?

Jaywalking across Vineyard is very dangerous. That's why each time the fence is damaged, it is repaired, said state Department of Transportation spokesman Ross Smith. The fence now has been reinforced with cross bars.

But given the frequency of damage reports, it's obvious that the culprits just don't want to use the crosswalk. Landscaping has been discussed, but it is almost certain that landscaping, too, would be damaged, Smith said.

"The best alarm is the residents of the area," he said.

"If they would call police every time they see someone damaging the fence or jaywalking through the damaged area, that would be the best deterrent."
