"The Strange and Terrible Adventures of Popoki the Hawaiian Cat": Diana C. Gleasner, $9.95, 30 pages, Peninsula Press

Children 3-years and older will enjoy hearing about Popoki, a disobedient cat who survives a cane fire and tsunami. Every page has colorful illustrations by Andrea Evans Winton.

Tongue Fu!": Sam Horn, $22.95, 231 pages, St. Martin's Press

Horn provides tips and strategies for any verbal conflict. The book shows how to turn conflicts into cooperation, what words to use in arguments and how to choose arguments worth battling. It also shows how to disarm disputes and how to defuse any explosive situation.

"Child of Two Worlds": Norman Reyes, $16, 289 pages, Three Continents Press

In his autobiographical story of a boy's struggle with being Filipino-American, Reyes provides cultural insights and the history of the Philippines from 1922-42.

"LAVA": Pamela Ball, $21, 192 pages, W.W. Norton & Company

Novel set in Hilo tells about a woman whose ex-husband re-enters her life after a bizarre fishing accident that results with a bounty placed on all sharks.

"May Sky: There Is Always Tomorrow": Compiled and translated by Violet Kazue de Cristoforo, $29.95, 288 pages, Sun & Moon Press

Collection of haiku, or verse, written by Japanese Americans who were interned during World War II. De Cristoforo, who was born in Hilo, was interned at the Jerome Concentration Camp.

"Field Work": Adele Ne Jame, $10, 69 pages, Honolulu Petronium Press

Collection of poetry by Ne Jame, who teaches at Hawaii Pacific University. In 1990, Jame received a fellowship in poetry from the National Endowment for the Arts and has been published in the American Nature Writing anthology.

"The Pacific Way: A Memoir": Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara, $42 cloth and $14.95 paperback, 227 pages, University of Hawai'i Press

Mara, appointed president of Fiji, tells about his early education at Otago and Oxford universities, and his chiefly heritage. The book also covers his political career and sporting achievements.
