will compete with United Airlines' flights
Star-BulletinHawaiian Airlines plans to launch a direct San Francisco-Maui service May 3, using its wide-body McDonnell Douglas DC-10 jets for two flights a week. Hawaiian's flights will leave San Francisco at 11:15 a.m. each Tuesday and Saturday arriving at Kahului at 1:20 p.m.
After unloading passengers at Kahului, the aircraft will continue on to Honolulu, the airline said. Hawaiian has no scheduled direct service from Maui to the West Coast.
The new service will put Hawaiian into direct competition on those days with United Airlines, which has two San Francisco-Maui flights each day.
"Demand for travel to Maui, Hawaii's second-most popular destination after Oahu, has strengthened to the point that it can support nonstop service on an extended basis," said Peter Jenkins, senior vice president for marketing and sales at Hawaiian Airlines Inc.
The airline is kicking off the service with introductory round-trip fares good for travel May 3 through June 12 and Sept. 5 through Oct. 25, at $299 for the Tuesday flights and $329 for the Saturday flights.
Those fares are available for a limited number of seats on each flight and are subject to other restrictions, Hawaiian said.
In addition to its interisland DC-9 flights, Hawaiian flies DC-10s to Honolulu three times a day from Los Angeles and daily from San Francisco, Las Vegas, Seattle and Portland.
It has a twice-weekly, Seattle-Kahului service and also runs twice a week between Honolulu and American Samoa and once a week to Tahiti.
