Izu's home run lifts Kaneohe

Aaron Izu's two-run homer in the top of the ninth inning was the difference yesterday as Kaneohe won the Oahu Senior AJA playoffs with a 12-11 victory over Waipahu at Hans L'Orange Park.

The win enables Kaneohe to represent Oahu in the state tournament that starts Saturday at Hans L'Orange Park.

First-round games have Kauai playing Hawaii at 10 a.m. and Oahu meeting Maui at 1 p.m.

The third-place game is Sunday at 10 a.m. followed by the championship game at 1 p.m.

SOLO CHAMPIONS: Mark Rigg and Margie Kawaiaea won the Poai Puni Series men's and women's Oahu canoe championship races yesterday with times of two hours, 26 minutes, 23 seconds and 3:16:38, respectively, over the 18-mile course from Hawaii Kai to the Waikiki Yacht Club.

In the kayak division, Nalu Kukea took the men's race in 2:10:59 while Kelly Fey captured the women's event in 2:34:25.

SEA WARRIORS WIN: Hawaii Pacific defeated Chaminade, 7-0 and 5-1, in a Hawaii Intercollegiate Athletic Conference softball doubleheader at HPU's Windward Campus yesterday.

Lisa Balbirnie and Susie Schoales were the winning pitchers.

VULCANS SWEPT: At Lewiston, Idaho, the Lewis-Clark State Warriors scored a run in the bottom of the eighth inning to edge the University of Hawaii at Hilo, 9-8, in a nonconference baseball game yesterday.

The Warriors swept the four-game series and have won 20 consecutive games.

RAY SIGNS WITH HPU: Cordell Ray, a 6-foot-10, 190-pound center from Eastfield College (Mesquite, Texas) has signed a letter of intent to play basketball for Hawaii Pacific University this fall.

TRIATHLON DEADLINE NEAR: The deadline to enter the May 25 Keauhou-Kona Triathlon, Hawaii's only Ironman qualifier, is May 1.

Big Island residents aiming to qualify must enter the Keauhou-Kona Triathlon by tomorrow.

OJGA SCHOLARSHIP: The Oahu Junior Golf Association has set up a scholarship for OJGA graduates including high school seniors.
