
Thirty-five high school student acts will compete in Brown Bags to Stardom at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Waikiki Shell. Stardom in the Bag
During the past 16 years, Brown Bags to Stardom have help launch many island performers into the entertainment industry. Among the alumni are Glenn Medeiros and Tia Carrere.
Also performing will be Az Yet, the Quad City DJs and Tenderoni.
Advance tickets for the event, sponsored by I-94 FM radio station, are $17.50 for reserved seats, $14.50 for lawn; $18.50 and $15.50 at the door. They are available at Blaisdell box office, Connection outlets and by phone at 545-4000. Information: 531-4602.
The Thai Songkran Festival '97, featuring food, dance, kick boxing and music, will take place from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. April 26 at Kapiolani Park bandstand. Thai celebrate new year
Songkran is the Thai traditional new year and is also know as the "water festival" as people believe that water will wash away bad luck.
The festival will begin with religious ceremonies, an offering of food to Buddhist monks and the release of caged birds. After a bathing rite for Buddha images, celebrants will splash water on each other to wash away bad luck.
Then the celebration begins with dancing, a beauty contest, food demonstrations and other events.
