Just for summer

Here are some of the activities available for kids. See next week's Kids Only! for more offerings.

TheDanceCompany: "Just Dance" teaches keiki 5 and up contemporary jazz and street dances. Saturday mornings. Call 839-1448.

Montessori Community School: "Two-Year Old Program," for children 2 to 3. May 20-Aug. 22, 7:30 a.m. to noon, Liholiho campus, $1,638; 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Nehoa campus, $2,250; and 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., both campuses, $1,869. Children in diapers accepted. Daily rates available.

"Preschool & Kindergarten" teaches children 3 to 5 about nature, May 20-Aug. 22 at Nehoa campus, 7:30 a.m. to noon, $1,269; 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., $1,359; and 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., $1,674.

"Summer Plus" for children entering first through sixth grade. Session I, June 3-20, has science activities, hands-on math, sewing, literature and ceramics. Hours:7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., $364; 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., $440.

Session II, Aug. 4-22: crafts, computers, sports/fitness, nature study, hiking. Hours: 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., $390; 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., $470.

"Summer Discoveries", June 23-Aug. 1 for first to third grades, covers nature, cooking, woodworking, hands-on science experiments and fitness.

Fourth- through sixth-graders learn about literature, geometry, computers, "The Game of Life," "Art In Culture" and fitness.

Tuition : June 23 to July 3, $252 (7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.) or $310 (7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.); July 7 to 18, $280 (7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.) or $340 (7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.); and July 21 to Aug. 1, $280 (7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.) or $340 (7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.).

The school also offers a full summer rate (June 3-Aug. 22) of $1,458 for 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. class or $1,758 for 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. class. Daily rates available. Call 522-0244.

University of Hawaii: "Pacific New Media" has workshops for ages 7-16 to direct their own animated movie, experiment with claymation and computer animation.

Two sessions will be offered, June 9-14 or June 16-21, 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., Krauss Hall, Room 1. Cost: $140 per week; $235 both weeks. Call 956-7221.

Boys & Girls Club: The Honolulu unit has sports, games, crafts, dancing, cooking, reading and math clinics, judo, piano and field trips for ages 7 to 17, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, June 9 to Aug. 14, Washington Intermediate School grounds. Cost: $10 per year. Call John, 949-4743.

The Ewa Beach unit has similar activities for the same age group, 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., June 16 to Aug. 15. Cost: $35 per year (includes a club T-shirt and membership into their early morning program and other club activities). Enroll by June 9, first come basis. "Family Discovery Club": Parents team-up with their child to learn and explore through hands-on activities 9:30 to 11 a.m. every Saturday, June 14 to Aug. 30 at Sea Life Park, Contemporary Museum, Ho'omaluhia Botanical Garden, Honolulu Zoo, Waikiki Aquarium, Kahana Valley State Park, Hawaii Nature Center, Kualoa Ranch, Hawaii Humane Society, Waimea Valley and YMCA Camp Erdman. Parents provide own transportation. Cost: $165 per team. Pre-registration required by June 1. Call 526-1322.

Zoo Fun

You can really monkey around
at the Honolulu Zoo this summer with
weekday classes, zoo sleep overs,
nighttime visits and much more

Children 5 to 11 can explore the Honolulu Zoo and see what happens "behind the scenes" in two programs.

"Summer School Adventures" is a weeklong class held noon to 5 p.m. June 2-14 and Aug. 4-29, costing $90 per week.

The zoo offers another class, "Vacation Adventures," 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. or 2:30 to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, June 16-Aug. 1. Cost for the morning session is $120 per week; afternoon is $70 per week; or take both sessions for $170 a week.

For families that want to "Snooze in the Zoo," reservations are being taken for a night of folk tales, walking tours and campfire songs. Camp outs begin at 6 p.m. and end at 9 a.m. the next morning; June 14 and 28, July 12 and 26, and Aug. 23 and 30. Snacks and a continental breakfast provided. Cost: $27 adults; $25 children.

If families want to see the zoo at night but don't want to sleep over, "Zoo By Moonlight" is a "behind the scenes" tour from 7 to 9 p.m. held around the time of the full moon. Cost: $7 adults; and $5 children.

The University of Hawaii, College of Continuing Education, is offering a two-credit weeklong course for people who want to make a difference in preserving the ecosystem. Zoo personnel will teach participants about their conservation program and animal collection during several summer sessions. Classes meet 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, and begin every other week starting June 23. Register at 956-8400.

Don't know what to do for your child's birthday? The zoo offers a "ZOOper Birthday Party" for groups up to 20 people. For $185 you can get cake, ice cream, juice, a take-home craft, special animal encounter and free admission. Additional guests are $5 each. Parties can be held from 10 a.m. to noon or 1 to 3 p.m., Saturdays and Sundays.

The zoo also offers botanical tours and some theater groups as well as an elephant encounter once or twice a day. On Wednesday evenings AT&T sponsors free concerts from 6 to 7 p.m.

Secret flowers: Botanists 3- 5 can uncover the secrets of flowers and the role they play in a plant's life cycle, 9:30 to 11 a.m. at the Hawaii Nature Center. Cost: $7. Reservations required. Call 955-0100.

Young Women's Career Series: Girls 7-14 can see what it's like to be an archaeologist. Dr. Miriam Stark, assistant professor of anthropology, will bring some "tools of the trade," 4 p.m. at Borders, Waikele. Call 676-7820.



CONTEST

Art festival: Create a two-dimensional artwork reflecting what "Children's Day" means for Children's Day art contest sponsored by the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii. Open to grades K through 8. Winners and selected entries will be displayed at Honolulu Hale May 12-30. Winners in each grade level receive Central Pacific Bank Youth accounts. Deadline: May 1 for neighbor island entries, May 2 for Oahu. Register at 945-7633.
