Old Jail Gallery, Lahaina, (808) 661-0111. J. Howard Fry of Maui's Kaunga Senior Citizen Center, will display his "Sumi-E" art in an exhibit titled "Discovery," on view through May 5. Opening reception, 6 to 8 p.m. April 11. Fry uses rice, parchment and pressed papers in his art.

Unitarian Gallery, 2500 On the Pali, 526-1191. "Celebrating the Female Figure," by Julie Marcotte, on view April 13 to May 2. Opening reception 3 to 5 p.m. April 13.

Waikiki Gallery at the Aston Park Shore, 2586 Kalakaua Ave. 922-7701. "Spring Symphony" by Alex Briguglio captures music and nature on canvas, on view April 12 through May 31. Ten percent of sales benefit the Sacred Hearts Academy's Wind Ensemble and Jazz bands.

Contemporary Museum, 2411 Makiki Heights Drive, 526-0232. "Photography and Beyond in Japan: Space, Time and Memory," organized by the Hara Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo, on view through April 13. Honolulu Academy of Arts, 900 S. Beretania St., 532-8700. "Shadows and Reflections," pieces of Japanese lacquer art from a private collection, some with inlaid and carved designs, and some dating from the 16th century, on view through June 29. Free admission on the first Wednesday of each month.

"Modern Design, 1920-1960" reflects the century's major changes, through April 20. Silver, glass and ceramics highlight changes in the arts of the United States, Russia and Europe.

Continuing exhibitions include "Taisho Chic," Japanese art and everyday items showing a growing influence from Western culture, and "The Ceramic Tradition of Asia," with pieces from different regions and cultures, on view through Oct. 27.

Honolulu Academy of Arts, 900 S. Beretania St., 532-8700. "The Chrysanthemum and the Sword: Japanese Samurai and Court Dolls," highlights the Japanese culture through dolls. On view through June 1.

Honolulu Advertiser Gallery, 605 Kapiolani Boulevard: Aha Hana Lima, Hawaii Craftsmen's annual workshop series, through April 30. through April 11. Using oil and acrylic, Chun conveys her vision of the human desire to understand and record the physical and spiritual existence.

Workshop: Gujarat silk patola weaving with Kanayalal Mafatlal and Varsha Kanayalal Salvi, 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. May 14-16 and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 17-18, Academy Arts Center, 1111 Victoria St. The Salvis will teach traditional silk dying techniques and elements of the tie process as well as weaving silk using the double ikat technique. New American Talent: Texas Fine Arts Association is accepting slide submissions of contemporary two- and three-dimensional art by emerging and mid-career artists through April 11. Juror is Robert Storr. Artists must be U.S. residents. Entry fees are $17 (members) and $24 (non-members) for three slides. Additional slides, $5 each. Maximum of 10 slides. Honolulu Hale, 530 S. King St., 527-5666. Art being accepted for "Recycle Art '97" by April 14. Oahu artists must best repreent the concept of art from trash. Originality, creativity and workmanship will be judged. Large, three-dimensional art can be dropped off at Honolulu Hale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 14. Entry fee: $15 for up to three entries. Work will be display from April 19 through May 9.

Wanted: visual artists for "Folio 94," a limited-edition quarterly magazine. Each artist has to submit 100 prints of a single artwork. Artists receive a copy of the magazine. Honolulu International Art Festival: Expressions in Art is planning a show June 21 through 23 at the Amfac building on Fort Street. Call 597-8108.

Campbell's Soup contest: Amateurs and professionals are encouraged to submit art or essay answering the question "What does Campbell's soup mean to you?" Winners will be slected from three groups: professional, amateur and youth. The art categories include: painting/drawing, sculpture/constructions, crafts, and all other artistic mediums. Essays must be 100 words or less. Grand prize is $10,000 and 100 shares of Campbell's Soup stock. There will also be three first prizes of $5,000 each and 15 second prizes of $1,000 each. Photos contest: Cash prizes will be awarded for the top three color or black and white photographs that creatively and dramatically convey the theme "Justice For All."
