to visit UH

The Rainbows won't sign

the outlook is good

This is a big week for University of Hawaii men's basketball recruiting -- although no players are expected to sign with the Rainbows today, the first day of the spring signing period.

But three recruits are making their visit to the UH campus this week -- and head coach Riley Wallace is coming off five home visits that he made right after he attended the Final Four in Indianapolis last week.

"I think it looks real positive," said assistant coach Jackson Wheeler, the team's main recruiter. "This week, we have our three top recruits in.

"We have a big kid, a small forward and a guard. If we get these three, then we feel everything else will fall into place."

Wheeler said it's no surprise that players aren't signing today.

"The junior college kids tend to stretch things out, because a lot of their seasons are just ending," he said. "These three we worked real hard with, though, and we feel real good about them. They're definitely our three top recruits."

Coaches are not allowed by NCAA rules to name or directly comment on potential recruits.

One recruit is a 7-foot, 240-pound center, another is a 6-5 wing player and the third is 6-2 guard Chad Hook from Marshalltown (Iowa) Community College, who verbally committed to UH last month.

The Rainbows, who were 21-8 last season, return guards Anthony Carter and Alika Smith; small forwards Micah Kroeger and Greg Miller, and post players Eric Ambrozich, Mike Robinson and Ales Zivanovic. An eighth scholarship player is 6-8 redshirt Erin "Helicopter" Galloway from Atlanta Metro (Junior) College.

That is expected to leave five available scholarships for next season.

"I think we're off to a good start," said Wallace, who missed two more home visits after being snowed in for two days in Nebraska. "I would say we're on schedule."

UH BANQUET AWARDS: A capacity crowd of 400 fans, including Gov. Ben Cayetano, jammed the Hale Koa Hotel banquet room to honor last season's Rainbows last night.

The following awards were given:

Art Woolaway Most Outstanding Player Award: Anthony Carter; Top Playmaker: Carter; Top Rebounder: Eric Ambrozich; Top Defensive Player: Micah Kroeger; Top Free-Throw Percentage: Alika Smith.

Captain's Award: Seth Sundberg; Community Service Award: Mike Robinson; Most Inspirational Player: Danny Furlong.

Ambrozich was the team's top scholar-athlete with a 3.5 grade-point average.

Wallace also announced that Carter has been invited to try out for the World Games team in Colorado Springs this summer.
