All of the 68 McDonald's outlets in Hawaii will participate in the program, said John Graul, managing director for McDonald's Corp. in Hawaii.
"We will be starting at 5 a.m. on Friday," Graul said. "Although this starts out as a value pricing, the program will be much more and will involve the entire experience -- appearance of the restaurant, service and total marketing."
Beginning tomorrow, the price of four breakfast sandwiches -- the Egg McMuffin, Sausage McMuffin with Egg; Bacon, Egg and Cheese Biscuit; and Sausage Biscuit with Egg -- will fall to 55 cents with the purchase of hash browns and any size drink.
"It's a new generation of extra value meals," said Ed Rensi, chief executive officer of McDonald's USA. "Value drives consumers more quickly than anything else today."
The breakfast sandwiches are just the beginning of the Oak Brook, Ill.-based chain's "Campaign 55" plan that includes substantially reducing prices on sandwiches and focusing on quality and service..
Graul said that on April 25 McDonald's will price its Big Macs at 55 cents for a month, then other sandwiches will grab the 55-cent spotlight. He added that the 55-cent specials are available if the customer purchases any drink, hash browns or french fries at their regular price.
Analysts have criticized the plan as confusing because of the many options.
Consumers could save little on the promotion because of the add-ons they must purchase with the sandwich. That's because franchisees have discretion in setting menu prices, which could account for wide differences across regions.
Burger King and Wendy's have said they will not match the chain's rollback in prices, although both companies' strategy in the past has been to mimic McDonald's sandwiches and promotions.
