stupid as they wanna be

Star-Bulletin

Three clever kids came up winners in KO'S Too Stupid Guys contest. They dreamed up some outstanding tricks for our two Too Stupid Guys, Cal Pie and Mochi, to perform on the Guys' favorite holiday, April Fool's Day.

Third-place winner Duke Tomlinson suggested the Guys dance and sing the "Macarena" while perched on his dad's in-motion limousine.

Travis Limoz wanted the Stupids to dress up as sardines and jump into a bowl of shoyu. It may not be a dish you'd wanna eat, but the idea was tasty enough to bring Travis the second-place prize.

First-place honors were won by Tyson Suzuki, who actually submitted several tricks. But bungee-jumping off Aloha Tower and diving butt-naked in a pool of sharks lost out to kissing an elephant's rear end.

All three stupendous stunts were performed this morning in Waikiki and will be shown this evening on KHON's six o'clock news show. The winning stunt designers agreed to appear in person, with friends and family members in tow, to cheer as their dreams came true.

Duke receives a $50 U.S. Savings Bond, Travis a $75 bond and Tyson a $100 bond and a bunch of movie tickets for all that manic creativity.

And the Too Stupid Guys are counting the days until April 1, 1998.

Tyson Suzuki

Washington Intermediate language arts teacher Terry Sunabe asked her classes if they'd like to enter the KO! Too Stupid Guys contest as a class project. It's a good thing most of them wanted to, because 13-year-old Tyson Suzuki ended up winning the contest with one of his four pretty outrageous suggestions.

Tyson was a bit disappointed that the Stupids selected his kissing an elephant's backside over his suggestion that they pants Gov. Ben Cayetano. In school, pantsing seems to be a regular thing."People do it for fun," he says. "Just distract 'em and pants 'em." Nothing against the governor, Tyson says. The name just popped into his head.

School is also cool, says Tyson, for P.E., girls and nice teachers.

The sixth-grader admits that he never expected to win. "Not in a million years," he said. But he's glad he did, and can't wait for the movie tickets.

Travis Limoz

Washington Intermediate eighth-grader Travis Limoz, like Tyson Suzuki, submitted his Stupid trick as an assignment for teacher Terry Sunabe.

The idea of having the guys dress as sardines was a natural for Travis because he likes to eat the fishes. And it won him the second-place .

Other than that, he likes to hang with his friends, maybe "go beach," he says.

Travis, 13, is into AYSO soccer because, "I'm better at it than other sports."

He also does amateur boxing at Kakalaua Gym and takes lessons in escrima, a Filipino martial art involving 3-foot-long bamboo sticks.

Duke Tomlinson

Kamiloiki Elementary fourth-grader Duke Tomlinson is a regular fan of the Star-Bulletin, reading the paper every day. That's how the 10-year-old learned of the Too Stupid Guys contest.

"I was reading the paper and saw the contest and I told my mom. We thought all night and came up with the idea of doing the 'Macarena.' "

He proposed the Stupid Guys dance and sing the "Macarena" while standing on his dad's limousine, an idea that brought him the third-place prize.

Before he entered the idea, however, he did get his dad's permission. "I told him about it, he thought about it, and said OK," said Duke.
