Waialae golfers
swing into action

IF Margaret Doversola hasn't completed casting for the "Hawaii Five-0" pilot she may want to consider Jon Sutherland, Eddie MacNaughton and Tony "Kiwi Magic" Shelly as CrimeStoppers. The golfing buddies were playing Waialae's fourth hole last Saturday when a burglary suspect burst out of the bushes and ran down the fairway with police in hot pursuit. The golfers told the cops to jump on their golf carts and they took off after the suspect. The cops got him, thanks to the assist by the Waialae threesome ...

HAWAII HAS another son it can be proud of, operatic tenor Keith Ikaia-Purdy, who had the Symphony Concert Hall crowd standing and shouting in praise Sunday. He hits high notes with great power and clarity and eases smoothly into the part for which the aria calls. The future is bright indeed for the Kamehameha graduate, Class of '75, who lives in Germany. As a friend remarked, if only he had belted out a Hawaiian song as one of his encore selections ...

TWO YEARS ago Bob and Susan Flowers were on a train taking them from the Munich airport into town. Susan said she noticed a handsome man, darker than the other passengers. She couldn't figure out where he was from. She and Bob started talking about Hawaii and the man sat next to them. He pulled out opera music and Susan asked if he was an opera singer. "Yes, and I'm from Pearl City," said Ikaia-Purdy. He asked her to call his mom when she returned home and tell her he was doing fine. Susan did just that ...

Pianist Peter Nero is with the Symphony at Blaisdell tonight. The Hawaii Theatre has Cris Groenendaal, the "Phantom of the Opera" star, singing show tunes tonight. John Denver sings with the Symphony next Saturday at the Waikiki Shell. The Symphony's Halekulani MasterWorks series continues with its "Ravel's Bolero" concert April 6 and 8 at Blaisdell ...

CAROLE KAI has been nominated to become a member of the Aloha Stadium Board by Gov. Ben Cayetano and is hoping for confirmation by the Senate. If confirmed, Carole will be the first Isle-born woman to serve on the board ...

Hy there

HY'S WAS packed last Saturday night, which made manager Bob Panter and assistant manager Ben Wong smile. Hy's singer-guitarist Audy Kimura chatted with convention center chief Alan Hayashi during a break. Audy is the center's acoustics and sound system consultant. Another guest, Councilman Jon Yoshimura, praised the recent Alfred Apaka tribute at the Hilton Village. Wong, host for the Saturday "Hawaii Remodeling Show" on KHNL, 4 p.m., for the past five years, read for the part of the lieutenant governor for the "Hawaii Five-0" pilot. Jimmy Borges, Palani Vaughan, Esmond Chung, Dann Seki and Tommy Fujiwara also read for that role, which I heard went to Chung. Borges' wife, Vicki, a private secretary for Mayor Jeremy Harris, was "discovered" and asked to take the role of the lieutenant guv's secretary. She accepted. Jimmy and Betty Loo Taylor close tonight at the Alana Hotel. That's sad ...

CHEERS to Star-Bulletin Assistant Sports Editor Randy Cadiente and his longtime girlfriend Corinne Chow, who tie the knot April 12. Corinne is the front desk supervisor at the Hilton Hawaiian Village. Cadiente was an All-Star quarterback for Farrington, Class of '69 ...

Planet Hollywood soars

DOUG RIGG and the rest of the Planet Hollywood and staff deserve a pat on the back for putting on the Academy Awards party Monday night, a benefit for Diamond Head Theatre and the Shooting Stars Youth Performing Academy ...
