The order of the dancers

Twenty-two halau compete in the 34th annual Merrie Monarch Festival hula competition Thursday through Friday in Hilo's Edith Kanaka'ole All-Purpose Tennis Stadium.

The men and women of each halau dance separately. (An asterisk* denotes halau that are not co-ed). Each group performs twice -- in kahiko (traditional) competition Thursday and 'auana (modern) on Friday.

Merrie Monarch Craft Fair

Hawaiian crafts will be on sale at a three-day fair.
Days: Thursday-Saturday
Times: 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
Place: Kress Building, 174 Kamehameha Ave.
Entertainment: Waiakea Intermediate School Ukulele Band and slack key guitarist Cindy Shriver, 7 p.m. Friday. Kua'aina Pa Hula 'O Hawaii, 12:30 p.m. Saturday.
