Enjoy music, help Waipahu athletes

"Waipahu Music Fest '97" takes place noon to 6 p.m. April 13 at Waipahu High School's Masa Yonamine Athletic Complex Football Field. The concert features Makaha Sons, Kapena, Willy K, Tropical Knights, Kanilau featuring No Mamo O Ka'ala, Sista Robie, Fiji, Sean Na'auao, Hawaiian By Heart, Kai Makani and host Rodney Villanueva.

Umbrellas, beach mats, chairs and sunscreen are welcome; coolers, outside food and drinks are not welcome.

If the event is successful, it will become the athletic department's annual fund-raiser. The school could use some donations of door prizes, food or money to make the event take off.

Admission is $10; children under 12 are free. Tickets are available through the Waipahu High School Athletic Department or at 675-0225.

Sample slack-key

The April edition of the Honolulu Academy of Art's "Na Mele O Hawaii" concert series, at 7:30 p.m. April 12 in the Outdoor Sculpture Garden, features slack-key artists with new albums on Dancing Cat Records. They include:

James "Bla" Pahinui, whose "Mana" is his first solo recording.

Keola Beamer, whose "Mauna Kea -- White Mountain Journal" is an all-instrumental musical diary.

George Kahumoku Jr., whose "Drenched By Music" features 12-string guitar.

Ledward Ka'apana with mainland artist Bob Brozman. Their "Kika Kila Meets Ki Ho'alu" is an all-instrumental summit meeting between two guitar styles.

The records will be released on April 15. The concert is sponsored by the Honolulu Academy of Arts, Hawaii Public Radio, Lila Wallace Foundation and Dancing Cat Records.

Dress up for pets

"Tuxes & Tails," the annual fund-raiser for the Hawaiian Humane Society, occurs at 6 p.m. April 19 in the Monarch Room, Royal Hawaiian Hotel.

The theme this year is "Pets in Paradise," emceed by news-celebrities Pamela Young and Gary Sprinkle. It's a black-tie optional event.

Funds raised assist Humane Society programs such as Pet Visitation and Pets in Housing.

Dive with dolphins

The third annual "Dolphin Days" extravaganza will mark the birthdays of five Atlantic bottlnose dolphins July 4 through 6 at the Hilton Waikoloa Village on the Big Island.

There will be July 4 marine educational seminars conducted by Dolphin Quest veterinarians and trainers throughout the event, and everyone is invited to a birthday luau with fireworks for Kainalu, who turns 1 year old; Malia, who will be 2; and siblings Lokahi, Kolohe and Kuokoa, who will each be 3 years old.

Celebrations will continue with a celebrity golf tournament, as well as volleyball and tennis tournaments July 5; a Dolphin Days concert and benefit auction July 5; and Dolphin Days Sunday Brunch July 6.

To foster gay pride

The Pride Banquet Celebration and Dance by the Gay and Lesbian Community Center will be held June 7 in the Ala Moana Hotel's Hibiscus Ballroom.

Volunteers are needed to help with organizing and staffing the event.

The organization's 1997 Pride Parade will be held on June 28 at 10 a.m. from Ala Moana Park to Kapiolani Park. The parade will follow a day of festivities at Kapiolani Park and a week of community events during Pride Week '97.
