on the line

Star-Bulletin staff

Hot on a five-match win streak, the University of Hawaii men's volleyball team takes on Rutgers-Newark tonight and tomorrow in the last nonconference series of the season.

This will be the first time since 1992 that Hawaii and Rutgers-Newark have played each other.

The Raiders are led by junior middle hitter Brian Bowers and senior swing hitter Gaston Macau.

Bowers leads the team with a 4.3 kills per game average. Macau leads the team in digs with 138 and is second in kills, averaging 3.2 per game.

Hawaii (13-7) is ranked No. 8 in the Volleyball Monthly Poll and No. 10 in the USA Today/AVCA Coaches Top 15 Poll.

After this weekend, Hawaii will travel to Stanford for critical Mountain Pacific Sports Federation matches on Tuesday and Wednesday.

It will be the start of a four-match road trip which will wrap up with Pacific on April 4-5.

The Rainbows are 7-6 in conference play.

Juniors Rick Tune and Sivan Leoni, who are Hawaii's strength up the middle, lead the team in key categories.

Tune's 1.82 blocks per game also places him fourth in the country. UCLA's Tom Stillwell in No. 1 with a 1.91 average.

Leoni's team-leading .425 hitting percentage is 12th nationally.

Curt Vaughn, the setter with the brightly colored coifs, is ninth nationally with 16.89 assists per game.

Vaughn needs 387 assists to break Albert Hannemann's all-time record of 4,195.

Milo is tied for 14th in the country with 2.38 digs per game.

Senior outside hitter Aaron Wilton is closing in on becoming only the eighth Hawaii player to record 1,000 kills and 2,000 attempts in a career.
