Spartans cruise to golf victory

With Janice Moodie and K.M. Juul the top two individual finishers, the San Jose State Spartans won the Rainbow Wahine Invitational golf tournament yesterday by 14 strokes at the Kaneohe Klipper Course.

San Jose State finished with a 54-hole total of 221, 52-over par. Runner-up Arizona was at 930. The host Wahine tied Mississippi for eighth place with a 973 score.

Moodie shot a 5-over-par 221, three-strokes better than Juul.

Dawn Kaneshiro led the Wahine with a 235.

VULCANS TRIUMPH: In a game shortened to six innings by rain, the University of Hawaii at Hilo women's softball team defeated Pacific University (Ore.), 5-2, yesterday at Carvalho Park in Hilo.

SEA WARRIORS SWEPT: Azusa Pacific defeated Hawaii Pacific,by 4-3 and 18-0 scores in a baseball doubleheader at Hans L'Orange Park last night.

BALLARD OUSTED: At Bells Beach, Australia, Rochelle Ballard of Hawaii was eliminated in the second round of the Quit Women's Classic by Australia's Trudy Todd, 18.10 to 12.24, in clean two- to four-foot surf yesterday.

OFFICIALS HONORED: Each year the National Federation of Interscholastic Officials Association recognizes individuals who have made a substantial contribution to officiating high school sports.

The following officials from Hawaii were recently honored:

Girls' sports: Donovan Lewis (basketball), Denise Cabrera (volleyball), Dan Toyama (softball).

Boys' sports: Sam Delos Reyes (basketball), Kenichi Shimogawa (football), Mike Goshima, (football), Arnold Soma (baseball), Ben Taroc (soccer), Wayne Lee (volleyball).

Coed sports: Ralph Martinson (track and field), Gene Dunn (cross country), Hank Arakaki (swimming and diving), Charles Ice (soccer).
