The San Francisco office of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration yesterday said the shipyard violated federal safety and health regulations.
OSHA cited Marisco for hazardous working conditions at the Campbell Industrial Park shipyard. Fourteen serious violations, four repeat violations, one willful violation and two less serious violations were cited.
Marisco was given 15 working days to contest the OSHA charges. John Stewart, Marisco's administration manager, said today that the citations will be contested. He declined further comment.
According to OSHA, the single willful violation, with a penalty of $63,000, is for failure to cover manholes and other deck openings. One worker fell into an unprotected opening and required treatment for injuries, OSHA said.
The serious violations, with combined penalties of $32,400, include allowing unsafe handling of compressed gas cylinders, unsafe scaffoldings, deficiencies in rigging equipment, exposing employees to hazardous noise levels and pressure vessel deficiencies.
Repeated violations include unsafe ladders, working surfaces, lack of adequate guardrails and deficiencies in the company's hazard communication procedures. Marisco was assessed $25,600 in penalties for repeat violations.
The less-than-serious violations were for failing to assure respirators were properly fitted and for inadequate ventilation in some work spaces.
Marisco has been cited during seven previous inspections in the past 10 years, OSHA said.
