Wahine softball team wins two

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- The University of Hawaii women won both ends of a Western Athletic Conference softball doubleheader from New Mexico yesterday by 10-7 and 10-2 scores.

Kehau Cofran was 3-for-4 in each game and Dana Degan had four RBIs in the second game, which was halted after five innings by the eight-run rule.

The Wahine are 25-15-1.

PROLOGUE WINNERS: The Outrigger Hotels Hawaiian Mountain Tour started last night at Aloha Tower Marketplace with the prologue.

Canada's Alison Sydor and Sweden's Roger Persson won the men's and women's cross-country events.

The men's downhill was halted by rain at the halfway point. Officials awarded Shawn Palmer the yellow leader's jersey.

KAPENA PLAYS KAIMUKI: Kapena will headline tomorrow's football fund-raising concert at Kaimuki High School, from 6 to 9:30 p.m. in the school auditorium.

Joining Kapena, will be Palolo, Mel Cabang, Paka Smith, John Osorio, Brothers and Sisters, and Hinano.

Tickets are $10. Proceeds will pay for the Kaimuki team's preseason trip to Kohala and also will be used to supplement the athletic department's meager equipment budget.

SEA WARRIORS SPLIT: Hawaii Pacific University defeated 15th ranked Azusa Pacific, 9-5, in the first game of a doubleheader at Hans L'Orange Park behind the three-hit pitching of Gerrard Gier.

It was Gier's sixth consecutive victory. His seven wins are one short of the school record held by HPU head coach Allan Sato.

Azusa Pacific (19-10) won the second game, 9-5. HPU is 17-11.

SEASIDERS UNDEFEATED: The Brigham Young University-Hawaii women's tennis team defeated Central Connecticut State and Pacific Lutheran by the 9-0 scores yesterday to raise its record to 20-0.

SPARTANS LEAD: San Jose State held an 18-stroke lead after two rounds of the Rainbow Wahine Invitational golf tournament at the Kaneohe Klipper Course yesterday.

The Spartans are at 606. Runner-up Oklahoma State has a 622 total. The host Wahine are eighth at 648.
