'Phantom' or 'Forum,'
Groenendaal speaks

Cris Groenendaal, who appeared in the title role of "The Phantom of the Opera" when the musical twice played at the Blaisdell Concert Hall, performs in "The Music of the Night" 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Hawaii Theatre. Tickets are $25 to $40, plus $100 Golden Circle seating tickets that include a post-concert supper with Groenendaal. Call 525-0506 or 545-4000.

Asked whether he preferred the "Phantom" or his current role in "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" on Broadway, Groenendaal said, " 'Phantom' is so dark and neurotic and obsessive and possessive it can be difficult and emotional doing that night after night calling up that mood ... But "Forum" celebrates everything that man holds least dear ... lust, greed, vanity, ambition; in short, all of those little failings that make man human. The show is both wise and rigorously disciplined. There's no easy sentimentality in it, but the kind of organized chaos that leads to sheer, extremely contagious high spirits."

Spring sampling

Prepare and sample Easter fare at Saturday's "Taste of Spring" cooking class with chefs Tom Wong and Daniel Delbrel of the Royal Hawaiian and Sheraton Moana Surfrider hotels, respectively. The session -- from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Ship's Tavern of the Moana -- includes demonstration of a four-course meal, recipes, bottle of wine, apron and a signed copy of the "Great Chefs of Hawai'i" cookbook, which features both chefs.

The session launches a four-part "On the Front Burner: The Flavors of Hawai'i" series -- followed by summer fare June 28, harvest bounty Sept. 27 and holiday fare Dec. 6. Fee is $75 per class, or $225 for the series. Call 931-8409.
